Can Cats Live With Other Small Animals?xx

Can cats can live with other small animals like Hamsters, Mice etc? I was wondering this myself on my other thread. The reason of this was because I am soon going to get a kitten, but I have a hamster. My parents say I can have a kitten or cat when our hamster goes to hammy heaven. But I was wondering if cats and small animals can live in harmony. My cousin's hamster, Honey, Went to hammy heaven as she got too stressed out by my cousin's cat, Sally. Or did she?? What do you think happend? Please answer this as I want to know if this was a coincidence.

Thanks,
RainbowMuncher xx

Re: Can Cats Live With Other Small Animals?xx

I don't see why they can't live with them if they are in a secure place where the cat can't get to them. Can you not keep the hamster in a room where the cat wouldn't be allowed to go?

Not really - despite all our best efforts and I tell you we tried - our cats broke into the room with our roborovskis, smashed the cage to the ground and ate them! I wouldn't have the two together again!

Ive always had hamsters and cats, you just have to be carefull. When our cats were kittens they would investigate the hamster and we would tell them NO if they got too close.
We also never left them in the same room when we were out or of a night time when hammys like to come out and play, as you know
Good luck, im sure you will be fine if you are sensible

Aww thats so sad... I'm really sorry about that spid xx However, A neighbourhood cat called Pippin sometimes comes into my house for a tiny bit after I get in from school and Pippin doesn't go straight to the cage, he goes under the kitchen table :P

Re: Can Cats Live With Other Small Animals?xx

I'd say your hammy isn't safe enough - ours were in a very large cupboard with the kids computer (ventilated and heated etc) and the door was barricaded shut - we went out one evening and somehow they had forced the door open - we really struggled to open it more to get us in. If your cage is in open view it will be a HUGE temptation!

Re: Can Cats Live With Other Small Animals?xx

We had cats, hamsters and zebra finches (small birds) living in the same house when my brother and I were kids. We had to keep the "prey" animals in rooms that the cats didn't have access to (and couldn't get into, by jumping at the door handle, for example) but we never had any problems.

Re: Can Cats Live With Other Small Animals?xx

I have seven rats and one cat (and know lotsof other people who do too).

but...

My rats have their own room (just for them) which Mitzi has absolutely no access too, I have to change my clothes and wash up thoroughly before handling them (as her smell could upset them). Mitzi's room is downstairs and she has free reign of the downstairs rooms but we discourage her going upstairs.

Cats and prey animals should never meet (in my view even through cage bars), you may find friends that let them "play" together with no indecent but it only takes a second for something bad to happen.

I do understand your parents concern (and it's nice that they care so much about your hamster, right?) and if Hammy is in your bedroom then that would make that area out of bounds for your cat (which would be sad for you).
