Ex-feral cat that nobody wants
My mum is a volunteer fosterer for Cats Protection and for the last few months has been caring for a young cat (about 10 months old, nick named Skippy
) that was feral and living on a trading estate. He had hurt his leg in an accident and was caught and operated on. He's now fine but is extremely timid. It's taken him about 4 months to gain the confidence to leave the bedroom. That said, he is such a lovely cat that in time I think would settle into a quiet home with no children really well. My mum thinks he should be an indoor cat, as he is so nervous but that he does like other cat company. She has three cats of her own, but one of them does not react well to strange cats, otherwise she would keep Skippy. My mum just called me and is trying to convince me to take him on as the charity want to send him back to the estate he was living on - it was a very short conversation so I didn't ask many questions, but I can't believe they want to do this. The rest of the colony have been killed on the road etc and with him being such a shy, timid cat I don't think he stands a chance out there. There's no way I can take him on. I've got two cats in a two bedroom flat and quite honestly don't want anymore. But I can't bear the thought of him being sent back on the street. Would they really allow this to happen? He's the tabby and white one on this page, about half way down. Cat Adoption Page 1

Re: Ex-feral cat that nobody wants
I cant comment on CP policy but surely in the circumstances this cat is no longer a feral. He has known some human contact and will given time, settle in to a perfect house cat.If what you say is the case,he has no colony to return to,so how can they justify returning him to what is almost certain death or injury. This kind of action would be frowned on if it was a member of the public,so why should it be okay for a "rescue society" to do this.

Re: Ex-feral cat that nobody wants
Thanks everyone.
Buffie - Exactly. I can't believe they would suggest this. Like I said, I didn't get to speak to my mum for long so couldn't clarify exactly what they had said. And even though she can't keep him, I can't see her letting them take him anywhere unless it's the perfect home. If I hadn't got my cats last year, I'd have had him.

Re: Ex-feral cat that nobody wants
what i cant understand is why cp brought him in as a foster in the first place if they want him to put him back assuming that he officially belongs to the cp. usually if they neuter them then they put him back but they dont go through all the paperwork to put him back in an unsafe place.
i know cp dont normally take on ferals just because they cant rehome them unless they can get them into a farm or stables, but he actually now belongs to the cp??? my friend who is the homing officer in essex took on two ferals, brother and sister, four years ago as fosters. they actually live in her back garden with shelter out there, although the little girl does come in at night. is it not possible that someone can take him on with maybe a shed in the garden. even your mum? i have recently taken on a mum and son and the son is feral and they currently live in my summerhouse. this way they do get warmth from the shelter and regular food.

Re: Ex-feral cat that nobody wants
quite honestly after reading the write up about him on the cp forum, he doesnt sound like a feral at all. a feral you wouldnt be able to keep indoors as they are literally like a wild animal, so wouldnt like being indoors at all.
freddie my feral you could never bring indoors as he would trash the house. having said that ferals do prefer the company of other cats rather than humans as normally they have more trust in their own kind. to me he sounds more like a timid cat who needs a loving owner with lots of patience to bring him out of himself

Re: Ex-feral cat that nobody wants
Thanks Em. No I hadn't contacted Kelly-Joy, but it's a good idea.
Apparently my mum has almost fallen out with the homing officer for her CP branch because 1) she wants to send the cat to unsuitable homes and 2) they've talked about sending him back to the estate where he came from. ![]() Because of this, my mum has said she will adopt him herself and then try and home him 'home from home'??? My mum really doesn't want a fourth cat and can't really afford it. She's badgered me into having him but two is enough for me. She just can't stand to see him sent somewhere unsuitable and be either unhappy or killed. Poor Skippy. ![]()
