Another kitten question - litter tray this time

Hi,
I have another kitten question I'm afraid, about my 9 week old kitten's toilet behaviour.
I have had her 1 week, and when I got her from the breeder she was litter trained. She is still confined to one room and obviously has her litter tray in there. She is using it intermittently but also sometimes going in a drawer under the bed.
Can anybody shed some light on why this may be and what I can do to make her use the litter tray all the time?
There seems to be no pattern to it - sometime she will use the litter tray every time for a day, and then the next day she'll go in the drawer again!

Re: Another kitten question - litter tray this time

Some cats and kittens won't use the same litter tray to poo and wee in .. sometimes. Some won't use a litter tray if it's got toilets doings in there already. Kittens can be fickle little things because the opposite can be said as well!

I'd definately add a couple more litter trays to the room and see what happens You can get kitten ones from pet shops for just a couple of pounds, or you could improvise and use something similar temporarily.

Did your package arrive OK btw?

Hi Aurelia,
Thanks for the reply. We are constantly checking the litter tray and making sure we scoop out any solids or clumps straight away so it shouldn't be that its dirty that she won't use it.
But thats a good idea to have a 2nd one, I'll try that..!

Re the package, ooh thank you for sending it so quickly. We haven't got it yet but have received a post office card saying a package was tried to be delivered so I shall collect it later today and hopefully its your package!
I'll let you know....

Thanks again

Re: Another kitten question - litter tray this time

Maybe you could try putting a second small tray in the room with her & see what happens. I would also try taking the drawer out of the room because once cats get a 'nose' for doing their business in a particular spot (that is NOT to our liking!!!) it can be a pain breaking that habit.

Also, I would suggest you get a cleaner that is specific for the job of cleaning cat mess in order to get rid of the smell totally. Don't use any cleaner with amonia in it as cat wee contains amonia and this will reinforce her belief that she should wee-wee there.

Another thing, I am finding with my cats that there have a tray to wee in and a tray to poop in so she may be going down that route.

I'm sure there will be more suggestions on why she does this, and suggestions on how to stop it, from other folks too.
