New here, advice needed please

Hi everyone, I'm new here. This question has probably been asked loads of times but I can't find anything.

I am wanting to get a kitten. Only thing is I work up to 3 days a week. Would it be wrong for me to have a kitten if I'm out the house up to 3 days a week? I would be leaving food down for it along with a water fountain and plenty of toys etc.

The last thing I want to do is be cruel to my kitten.

Hello

I dont think its cruel to leave a kitten for 3 days a week, as long as you get a kitten that is at LEAST 12 weeks old, and you make sure you give the kitten lots of attention when you get home, kitten proof the areas the kitten will have free access to whilst you are out and make sure the kitten can access the litter tray, food and water at all times. If you are worried about the kitten becoming lonely and think you can afford it you could get 2 kittens to keep each other company.I know my 2 kittens spend most of the day either sleeping, grooming or playing together, and then in the evening time they like to fuss around us(probably because the children are in bed)

I already have a dog so hoping to be able to leave them together once the kitten is older. It will be kept in its own room with nothing in it except toys etc.

Just noticed I didn't even finish my reply to this! Sidetracked at work!!

Think this advice is very good! As like I said I am hoping to get a kitten..or 2 (still having trouble deciding what to do at the moment) and they will be left in my spare room when out and all that is in there is a bed. This will just be til they can be left alone with the dog.

I would advise doing the same (keeping them in one room to begin with) and I'd probably say get 2 if you have no other pets. I have my dog so hopefully they will be able to keep each other company.

Re: New here, advice needed please

Doesn't sound atall cruel, lots of people work 9-5 all week & keep kittens....alot do have two cats for company & I think 2's good if you work full time but as the kitten will be kept with your dog (aslong as they get on) and it's only a few hours over three days.... I think you'll do just fine
I'd probably try & get the kitten settled in before leaving it, but you'll soon work out your own routine & what works best for you & your dog/ family.

Good luck finding a kitten any idea what breed / sex etc?

This is what I will be doing...working 3 days a week. I am meant to be getting 2 though which will be easier for them as they have each other for company.

Definitely agree on getting the kitten settled in before leaving it though - do you work a block of 3 days meaning you have a block of 4 days off? I only work tuesday, wednesday and thursday so planning on picking them up on either a thursday night or a friday and then have til the tuesday to settle them in.

Good luck

I have a dog also. I thought about getting 2 but hoped they would keep each other company. I will be keeping it in just the dinig room at the moment. There is nothing really breakable or anything they could damage or hurt themselves on.

I'm not really sure about breed, as long as it is cute I don't mind! I'm also not fussed about sex but have been reading that male or female thread and seems like female can be a bit grumpy so might go for male

Thanks for your help

I work as a bank auxiliary nurse so have to work when asked, and can be phoned in the morning and asked to work. I don't do any more than 3 days a week though. I think I might take some holidays the week I get it to let it settle in before I leave it.

Re: New here, advice needed please

its so refreshing to hear someone who just wants a kitty no matter what breed or sex!!!
i would defo get 2 though!! rescue centres are packed with brothers and sisters who dont want to be split up. as for the working patterns dont worry. as long as theres water, food and litter they will be just fine.
i work 13 hour shifts so am out of the house for 15 hours straight. they just look at me like oh your here are you and carry on about their business

good luck with your new baby or babies!!!

I agree with Catbird. I would certainly consider getting two. It's so much easier leaving two than one as they've got a playmate.

And yes it IS refreshing to hear about your willingness to consider all kitties.

Best of luck with it all!

I have to say that it's very difficult for a kitten not to be cute!!! Actually, I've never met one that wasn't the most adorable thing in the world! I'm very happy that you woud consider all sorts of kitties.

Welcome to the PF and congratulations.
