kitten used to being outside quite a lot

The kitten I am to get live at least part time outside as breeder lives in house. Kitten will be 12 weeks when getting her/him.
I am wondering if I should expect any problems when the kitten comes to my home and wont be an outdoor cat once living with me?

Re: kitten used to being outside quite a lot

I don't think you can judge this until you get your kitten home as each cat is different in their needs. Some are happy to be inside and other like frolicking outside and get miserable indoors.

The important thing to do is to have many varied toys which you take out in rotation so he doesn't get bored of playing with the same things. Also, ensure you have scratching posts and cat trees so the kitten/cat gets to jump around and have a high place to look down from (cats love to be superior to us)

I am a bit surprised that the breeder has let the kitten out though, as a lot of people wait for both sets of vaccinations before doing this. Not sure if this is normal practice. My cats were from CP and they had never been let out before we got them, as they can get lost/injured so easily.

If this kitten has been allowed outside ,unvaccinated it could have been exposed to all sorts of viruses. This "breeder" and I use this term very loosely is not looking after the welfare of the kittens in any shape or form.I personally would not be happy taking a kitten from someone who has neglected to ensure the kittens health and safety.!2 weeks is way to young for a kitten to be allowed outside.

Have you been to the breeders house? Is it possible that she has an outdoors run which she is allowing the kittens to play in and this is what she means by being outdoors?

I thought maybe this as well.

My two were from a rescue but they were kept in an outside pen/bird avery and are now indoor cats and don't appear to be troubled by not going out, but I would be worried if the breeder wasn't forthcoming in answering any questions or queries you have, as I would expect a good breeder to help allay your fears and worries as they would want to help you.

Re: kitten used to being outside quite a lot

From what I can judge they live in a house and the kittens have been playing in the garden.
I am supposed to leave in just an hour but after all the information you guys have given me I feel worried to get the kitten because what if she's sick and needs vet care already due to breeder's negliance?

Has the kitten had both vaccinations and has she been flea treated and wormed? That is also a risk when cats are allowed outside.

Re: kitten used to being outside quite a lot

All you can do is go and look at the kittens if you don't feel happy with how they are kept, look or have any concerns about their health then walk away, do not buy the kitten because you feel sorry for it/them. Go with your head not your heart.
