Need help persuading hubbie

Hi all,
I'm new in the cat section on here.

I need your suggestions. My husband and I moved in to our house 2 years ago. I have always had cats and since we moved in have been trying to persuade him we should re-home one from a rescue centre.
I did stop pestering for some time while we had a baby as I didn't think it was sensible for us to get a cat while going through all that. He is now nearly 2. He is very gentle and calm around cats as spends lots of time at grandparents houses who both have 2 cats so he is not boisterous and over excitable aroud them. In fact he just adores them.
I will say, the cat would be our family pet. I am not wanting a cat as a childs pet before you ask. I'm not mad haha.

How can I persuade him we should offer our home to a rescue cat??

The house is a good size, safe area, no busy roads etc etc and we are home quite a bit. There are many cats in the area who like to consider our garden to be their toilet, i was hoping a cat of our own may help put a stop to this too.

Help please....

Re: Need help persuading hubbie

Hi,

I was in the same boat about a year ago.... I always grew up with animals and when i moved in with my OH had to leave my cat and my rabbit at home with my parents.

I'd wanted a kitten for a while so before approaching the subject did laods of research on what we'd need how much it would cost... insurance... jabs etc Whether a cat would be happy indoors (which if your planning on letting out you wouldn't need to worry about) and also the best place to get the kitten from e.g. breeders or rescue. So armed with all my stuff I asked if we could have a fur baby and showed him all my research and my reason for wanting one... after a week of mulling it over he decided I could but was responsible for cleaning the tray and piles of vomit etc lol

Now we have Alfie he loves him to bits and carries him round like a baby as well as instigating play time

Em x

Re: Need help persuading hubbie

Getting a cat may not stop other cats from using your garden unless he/she is a territorial cat, which you wont know for a few weeks anyway because it is better to keep the cat in for 4-6 weeks until he/she is familiar with yourselves and your house.
Has your OH had a cat before? He may not know the pros and cons of keeping a cat i.e food, toys, vet bills including vaccinations and you have to think about what you are going to do when you go on holiday.
Saying all that I wish you luck in your venture of finding your perfect pet if and when you decide with your OH to find one. It is also good for a child to grow up with pets in my opinion.

Re: Need help persuading hubbie

Thanks Em. This is the thing. He is a softie really and would love it when it arrived.
Recently I got another bunny as a pal for mine (both neutered of course), anyway he wasn't happy about that idea but i was pushy as bunny needed a friend. As soon as we got her he was all, "aww, this is my bunny this one" haha

He is just very stubborn.

Also he is saying it would not be a good idea to have a cat at all as at some point in the future we plan to have a second child. (Not yet though)
He may have a point but as I say the house is large enough, and of course access to the outside would be given. I'd just have to wear gloves and be careful around litter tray. What do you think on this subject?

Please people any more advice? There are so many adult cats in rescue who need a home

Hi, he has grown up with cats around so is aware of their needs. Also we have a fab cattery near us where both my parents and his take their cats during holiday times. Not cheap, but very good place.

The territory thing is just a line I am using to persuade him really haha.

Any more suggestions anyone?

write a list of pros and cons.... there is no harm and having cats and children... although I know which I prefer!!!!

Try this.... some advice and tips in here

If you aren't planning on having baby for a while then you have plenty of time to train your kitteh and there are so many wanting homes.
