Me Vs. My boyfriend about De-clawing

Hi my name is Amy and I'm from the states where de-clawing is still pretty common. My boyfriend has two ailing and old cats (15 and 13 respectively). He had them de-clawed as kittens and does not see what I perceive as a horrible procedure AND he doesn't not see the ill effects of it. I think his thirteen year old cat tends to bite when irritated because Nick (the cat) no longer has the claws to use as a warning swat.

Anyway, should his cats pass, we would move in together with my two younger ones who have claws. However, he wants me to get them de-clawed. I have stressed that my place has not been torn apart and that the cats have several good scratching posts. If we adopted another together he would want that de-clawed as well.

Let make it clear: I am never de-clawing my cats. I am just looking for set facts so I can make him understand what this procedure really is. I think part of the reason he is being so obstinate is that he doesn't want to believe he did anything to harm the pets he loves so much. Although I understand that, I am not willing to mutilate my pets to make him feel better.

So I am looking for facts and suggestions (besides find a new beau). Please help.

Hi,

I dont know anything about declawing, but you could suggest that you try pulling off your boyfriends fingernails, i dont think he would be too happy about that though

Hi, iam so glad your not having them declawed, its so cruel, how can a cat act like a cat without them.

I trim my cats nails with them being house cats but i no alot of people use softclaws.Alternatives to Declawing, Nail Caps for Cats

I would de claw the boyfriend personally

Re: Me Vs. My boyfriend about De-clawing

You are making absolutely the right choice - declawing cats is cruel and inhumane and completely unnecessary. I have 8 cats and they scratch their scratching posts and that is it. We obviously trim their claws if they get too sharp but that is it.

Do not let your partner win this argument.

Re: Me Vs. My boyfriend about De-clawing

It's an awful procedure and it would be like a human having the end of their fingers taken off!

I'm glad you wont be doing this to your cats, it's barbaric!

No, cats claws are actualy attached to the bones in their feet.. hence them being able to retract them.. So taking them out is a major operation and more often than not will result in a cats personality totally changing..

Cats use their claws as a defence mechanism so with out that they can become very nervous aswell

Well I suppose that's plan B. His nails and the first segments of his fingers.
