As I tell my teenage son, "When you speak to people with an attitude, they will not hear what you are saying they will only hear your attitude."
Please don't take that as me 'having a go', I just think that people get soooo...shall we say passionate about their beliefs(?) that, to others, it may come across as somewhat militant and I think we know that you can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. (I know it's cliché but it is true nonetheless)

Very good advice, I was actually ranting to someone else not the friend with the puppy but perhaps should have made that clearer for the OP to see. Rather than encourage the ranting.
Sadly even the honey doesn't always work - some humans just have the mentality that they want an animal and will keep it as they see fit because they are able to control it and it belongs to them, met a lot of those in the industry. Even being nice doesn't work. I bet your son was brought up to respect animals and people alike, whereas a lot of young kids I've run into are brought up to expect to be given everything on a plate and to get what they want just by nagging.. "i want".... I shouldn't tar them all with the same brush though. Some of the kids I've met actually were encouraged responsibly by their parents about buying an animal. Just needs tighter measures on breeding and selling in this country I feel, as not everyone follows good guidelines!
