Burmilla...?
Hello all, I'm just starting out on the forum here.
I'm from the USA, but currently living in Ireland. I'm the owner of one dog and three cats. Of the cats, my two girls are a Siamese cross and a Persian cross. The cats are all "mutts" or moggies as far as I know, but my male cat Tobias is a nearly breed perfect specimen of Burmilla apparently, aside from a kinked tail and some joint problems. I joined this community looking for more information on Burmillas, mostly because I was a bit perplexed as to how I came to own one accidentally, since they're apparently not common. |

I'm also not one of those people who will call a cat a (whatever)-cross just because it's blue or has long hair though... the Siamese X has her blue eyes and pointed coat, and the Persian X has the coat length, and also suffers from deformed facial bones due to brachycephaly (that flat Persian face - the real giveaway to her ancestry). I was stumped as for how to describe Tobi for a long time, until someone suggested Burmilla and I looked it up. He's obviously NOT a pedigree animal, but since he's neutered its basically a way to describe how he looks and how he acts anyway. And for those who wanted a picture - here you go. Re: Burmilla...?
Oh sorry I misread as 2 siam crosses and a persian cross! I am not at all well versed in the Burmilla breed but to me, they look very 'typical' cat with different eyes, very chinchilla eyes. To me I don't see that so much in his eyes (but then hes squinting a bit)

Re: Burmilla...?
It would be reasonably easy to produce a Burmilla lookalike by crossing together a long coated cat with an oriental type cat. The difficult bit is to produce two cats who can be bred together and consistently produce the Burmilla type, rather than highly variable litters where some kittens look Persian, some look Burmese, some have the sought after Burmilla look and some come out looking like a previously unsuspected ginger street-cat grandparent. Go far enough back and all cats have their genetic roots in moggie stock - but some have been selectively bred for generations, to fix their gene type. It's the ability to breed true to type that defines a pedigree cat - the official pedigree paperwork is just a way of accrediting that fact.
Do you know your cat's history? If you picked him out of a mixed moggie litter then he just got lucky in the beauty stakes part of the genetic lottery. If he's a rescue with unknown provenance there's always the teasing thought that he might be a pedigree prince fallen on hard times - I have one of those ripping up the wallpaper in our house at the moment. Our rescue kitten was handed in to the RSPCA as having been 'found wandering' when he was about five weeks old, so we haven't a clue about his parentage..... but he's a dead ringer for all the photos I can find of Norwegian Forest cats of his age, and it's tempting to daydream about him being a wandering pedigree rather than an unwanted black and white moggie. ![]() |
