Broken whiskers

Our breeder informed us that all of her kittens (and we observed too) whiskers break off when they play - Pyrrha has only one surviving whisker currently, the rest were about 2 cms long when we got her. I thought they'd just continue to grow, but I've noticed they've broken right back down again.. A few mm's worth, if that.

Does anyone else have a cat whose whiskers do this? My boys have never had this problem and I just checked out Eowyn's whiskers in the latest pictures we had supplied by her breeder and she has a full bushy set.

Is it really down to playing? Or diet? Something else?

Re: Broken whiskers

I think the curly coated cats whiskers tend to break but I only have and had moggies and they have always had full sets of Whiskers.

Re: Broken whiskers

Sometimes when they play together, kittens might chew each others' whiskers off as well. I've had quite a few whiskerless kittens in my time, and they just grow out of it.

Re: Broken whiskers

Louie & Tango's whiskers were all chewed off when we got them, usually the kitten who has the longest whiskers is the culprit they grow back so nothing to worry about, but it does take time when they are charging & bashing into things

Same with Benji! his were chewed off by his littermates, they are slowly growing back now but I read it can take up to six months and at first they were still a bit brittle but are now growing strong!
