Question Advice Needed

I recently agreed to look after someones 2 kittens. The owners got the kittens and then moved to France. Initially it was for 2 months but then they decided to stay so I said I would keep the kittens as it was not fair to look yet again for a new home for them. I absolutely love my babies and have spend an absolute fortune on them £500 in 2 weeks between operations, vacinations, chipping the list is endless. Anyhow I got an email this morning from the original owners to say they are coming back in 2 weeks and will be over to collect the kittens.

I am beside myself and I do not want to give them back as I know they are moving to Australia in the New Year.

I was stupid and said if you can reimburse me the cost of vet care you can have them back but I don't want to give them back as I don't believe they will get the same care and love.

Please can anyone give me some advice as to what I should do - I really can't part with them.

Thank you

Re: Advice Needed

Well, bearing in mind the amount of money you have spent on these kittens i would say they are rightfully yours now anyway. If there is no contract (or similar) between you and the original owners then they cant take them back from you - or so i understand

You took the kittens on when they decided to leave the country, therefore i believe they lost all rights when they gave the kittens to you.

I think the next thing i would do is write them a letter / email stating all this and the amount of money you have spent and that the kittens now belong to you...............

If there is nothing written down or no handshake then i would say that they are yours by law! Dont quote me on that tho! Hope they let you keep them!

Re: Advice Needed

I completely agree -the cats were placed in your care, you have taken them on and looked after them in their best interests so they are your cats.

Please don't give them up when you know they are just going to be unsettled again

Keep us updated

Lou

Re: Advice Needed

IMPO you have owned those kittens for much longer than they have... they wend on holiday and emailed you to state they were staying? with no definate return date..
my response is.. they are loved obviously by you... explain to them you have grown attached to them due to not knowing what their future held..

nothing in writing means no proof of thier ownership..
I was in a court battle with someone who was looking after 2 puppies for me (in the middle of moving).. a (past friend) cost me thousands and I finally got the two back months and months later.. but the police would not let me take them back.. even though I had bred them myself and could prove my ownership!!!
So comparing ... the other couple have no leg to stand on.. even if they sent police round....

Re: Advice Needed

A visit to Citizen Advice would be worthwhile here as any contention of ownership if backed up by a letter from CAB suprisingly works wonders. Good luck.

Re: Advice Needed

Everybody thank you all so very much for your advice. I sent an email to them attaching the email where they said they were not coming back and were moving to Austalia. I have heard nothing from them.

I am keeping my kittens - when I got home last night they must of known I was upset as they followed me everywhere and cuddled up all evening - there is no way I can part with them. I never thought about all their docs being in my name I guess that would help me if it came to a dispute.

I will keep you all posted of events and when I get organised I will post some photos of Bojangles and Princess for you all to see.

Once again thank you all so very much - I don't feel as upset now.

Moondance xx
