Re: Owning cats whilst being allergic

My husband is allergic to cats - and we have two! He has to take antihistamines more often since the cats arrived, but he loves them as much as the rest of us so doesn't mind

I'm careful to keep the cats out of our bedroom, since contact with the bed covers causes more problems than it's worth. They sleep in the living room and always have done, on their own cushions, ones that they 'chose' for themselves when they first arrived (pampered pets!).

Luckily we have a quite a bit of solid floor so it's easy to sweep up often and keep clean. I can't recommend AEG's ergorapido enough for whizzing round between hoovering (Ergorapido).

Good luck and enjoy!

Re: Owning cats whilst being allergic

Has anybody used that furminator grooming brush? Is it as great as the reviews say it is?
Will also look into the petcleanse! Thanks everybody for your contributions x

We use the furminator and it IS good, but not as good as I thought it might be. Better that the regular brush, but not brilliant if you know what I mean.

One of our cats doesn't like though, and I think it's because it is especially prickly and may hurt her... the other loves to be groomed and has no problem with the furminator. She has dry skin though, so it probably feels great to her!

Re: Owning cats whilst being allergic

Hi guys we went back to Battersea today and saw 2 beautiful darlings, hoping to bring them home this weekend!

They're black and white girls with different markings, we'll be calling one Honey Su (the one with the rather Pringle man looking white tache!)and the other (with the white nose) Willow Li.

Can't wait to bring them home!!

Sooo cute (cats and kids!). I like your girl having a good sniff on Honey Su (already testing if she's allergic or not! )!!

Same thing happens in Taiwan - nobody adopts them so they're put down, and they get more abuse on the streets than other coloured cats

Ha ha so do mine! I swear they've drawn up a rota I don't know about. Same goes with areas of the bed!

Re: Owning cats whilst being allergic

I'm allergic to other people's cats, but rarely have a problem with our own. Maybe I have just built up a resistance to our own cats, or maybe its because I love them.

Re: Owning cats whilst being allergic

My OH is allergic, so I got Molly without telling him used the excuse it was a christmas present for him, he couldn't turn her away

He had to up the strength of his inhaler, and he does have to puff on them a bit more than he used to, but as you can see from the attached photo he wouldn't be without her

There's a study that shows that female cats produce less of the allergen protein. And that because its production is androgen hormone (testosterone) controlled it also reduces when the male is neutered. Researchers also noticed that the owners of dark coloured cats suffer more of allergies than light coloured ones, but this wasn't scientific proved (maybe you should try if your allergy is really severe and you want to be absolutely sure you're getting the best chance possible).
Def think there might be some truth in that. My OH is allergic and he copes better with Charlie whos a long haired white cat then he did with a black cat who was in a local cafe that we sometimes go to. We had only been in there about 5 mins tops and his eye blew up.

His allergy does seem to have got worse with Charlie though in the last couple of months and hes on anti-histamines..im hoping he will build up an immunity to him. Charlies fur though dont make it easy lol.
