cleaning cat pee with ammonia??

seriously i might be dull but i`ve never heard something more stupid in my entire life. someone i know was having problems with her cat and someone suggested cleaning the urine up with ammonia to deter the cat from going back, i pointed out that cat pee is basically ammonia and they`re still insisting this works now i may be completely dull here but surely it`d be the equivalent of cleaning up a ketchup stain with more ketchup?? anyone ever heard of cleaning it with ammonia?? i`ll eat my words if i`m wrong but in my life i`ve never heard anything as ridiculous as that

How to clean cat urine.

Read the section below on how to choose / find the best cat urine cleaner.

Below are some general guidelines how to clean cat urine. These guidelines should be used in conjunction with a cat urine cleaner (also known as cat urine removers or cat urine eliminators).

General guidelines for cat urine removal:

Dry as soon as you find a spot.
When drying the spot use a dry cloth or absorbent paper towel.
Blot, don't rub. Rubbing spreads the urine over a wider area into the carpet.
Hold the cloth or paper towel on the spot for a while so that the urine can be soaked up.
Don't use an Ammonia based cleaner. This will make the cat come back and do it again.
The main objective of cleaning should be to eliminate the odor so the cat won't come back.
You should keep the cat away from that area until the odor has completely gone away.
If the cat keeps going back to the same place you could cover the spot with something.
Foil works great.

How to choose the best cat urine cleaner.

There are many cat urine cleaners on the market. Most cat urine cleaners contain bacteria and enzymes which react chemically with the urine and remove the odor making it easier to clean. A product created specifically for removing cat urine should be used. These can be found at most pet stores or on the internet in online shops. Click here for a list of the best cat urine cleaners.

A few home-made cat urine cleaners also exist which you can try. This tip was posted on ehow.com and it works the best of all the home-made cat urine cleaners.

Re: cleaning cat pee with ammonia??

yup i`ve seen that and common sense is telling me it`s ridiculous but this person is insistent that it works....i`d just worry how many people she`s suggested it to and when i pointed out cat pee was ammonia she still insisted it works to clean it up

eta - i always use bio washing powder, white vinegar, bicarb and citrus spray to clear up which was what i suggested but apparently ammonia is better lol

Re: cleaning cat pee with ammonia??

I'm with you - bicarb is the magic ingredient to neutralise the odour and the other normal household products you mention complete the cleaning. In the days when we all had old fashioned soda siphons we could spray fresh soda water on the area and barely needed anything else.
