Kitten or adult cat to family with small child?

I have found this cat looking for a new home and previous owner willing to let cat move in with family with small child. However cat is not used to small children. I think a kitten might be a bad idea seeing the small child is 1.5 years old. But also afraid the adult cat míght not cope.
Is this a real concern or am I just overly worried?
Obviously I would not let the child use the cat as a toy, but still a child make lot of noises and so forth.

I think its one of those 'don't know until you try' situations. If the child does not hurt or stress the cat I don't see why there would be any issues, just might be a bit cautious at first until they realise they arent going to harm them.

Re: Kitten or adult cat to family with small child?

Best to get a kitten cause you can teach them easier than an adult cat of 1 year+ who is set in his ways and seeing that he is not use to children it probably won't work out for the best.

Also the kitten will bond better to the child since they will be growing up together.

Oh also you will have to keep the child away from the cat litter apparently it's bad for their health to be around it. Also you will have to keep it quite clean.

Re: Kitten or adult cat to family with small child?

The cat could always go into the bedroom if he got stressed, I thought about the noise stress and movement stress, but think he could go into the bedroom then to have alone time away from the child, also she starts childcare very soon which means she will be there about 35hours/week.
Shes soon 15 mths.

I can't see any reason why it won't work Plus its always good to rehome older cats as once a cat gets to 4 months people lose interest

Re: Kitten or adult cat to family with small child?

I forgot to post the cat's age. It is a male, he is 1.5 years old. He is neutered and he is a mix between chinchilla persian and ragdoll, very beautiful, owner has told me he has a bit more energy than the average persian cat which is grand:-)

Re: Kitten or adult cat to family with small child?

Personally I would go for a little older kitten or cat , one that is used to children already as well, there are 100s of cats looking for homes that are used to children like

could you be Sox and Mix new home?

These two who were from a house that had kids, lots and cats and dogs
Also by rescuing a cat/kitten from a rescue you are freeing up much needed rescue space for the next poor cat/kitten that needs to come into rescue.

Re: Kitten or adult cat to family with small child?

Awwww they are beautiful!
Unfortunately I dont live anywhere close but you do have a point. We are probably going to see the cat tomorrow, will see how he acts around the youngster in the family If he seems too nervous it's best for him to stay where he is. What bothered me is that he already has had a former owner, so if he moves to my house, I will be his third owner and he is only 1.5 years old! Poor cat! Maybe he has some kind of behavior issues, I asked the owner but she said only thing is he doesnt like closed doors. And as reason from moving away from his first home (breeder not included as owner) she said he didnt fancy the life outside (as the former owners apparently required him to go out at times). But at photos current owner has sent me, he is looking outside the window and on balcony, looking very keen on to go out

Re: Kitten or adult cat to family with small child?

Just because cats look out of windows doesn't mean they desparately want to go out, its kind of like TV to them. And if this cat is part Ragdoll and you do get him please dont let him oit, they are not meant for outdoor lives, they have no road sense and are too trusting to be allowed out to roam.

Re: Kitten or adult cat to family with small child?

sounds like the cat may have a behavioural problem, with doors being closed, cats that have this problem often yell and scratch at any closed door check the carpet at the bottom of doors ,if he/she is really bad then the carpet will have holes in it from the clawing, he she may also wee or poo at the door as a sign of stress. I would be very wary of getting a cat from the classifieds especially one that has had several homes and if it is a breed of cat or cross breed that is very desirable because you need to ask yourself why they are re homing it? You have to remember that people will say anything to get rid of their cats now a days sadly as it isn't easy to get their cats in rescues with most rescues being full to bursting with long waiting lists. so they fib just to get the cat out, once its out it someone's else's problem and they don't have to have it back. We finding that alot of people with cats with health problems are doing this at the moment as well, people think they are getting a healthy pedigree cat , but instead they get a cat that costs the earth to treat. At least by going to a rescue you know they will have been vet checked, they will be vaccinated, micro chipped, neutered etc and they will also be able to match you up to a cat used to children and if for some reason it doesn't work out you aren't stuck with that cat, the rescue will take him/her back.
If you let me know which area you are, I will post a list of rescues in your area to try
