When can my babies explore outside?

Hi all,

New to the forum. I've got 2 lil girls who had their 2nd jab today, and was wondering how long I should leave it before they can have supervised trips out into the garden (I totally forgot to ask the vet while we were there

Re: When can my babies explore outside?

When they are at least 10 months old hun.

I know many folk do take their little ones out on a harness before this, but I would still be extremely careful as they can slip one of those if they really want to.

Definately not before they are neutered in either case

For me about 10 - 12 weeks old but it is supervised only and only when I am sure they will come back to me. (I never used harnasses I just let them run around exploring with me following them done same with all 10 cats I have had and no problems.)

They are about 4 - 6 months old when they are allowed to be outside by themselves by then they should be spayed/neutered.

Thanks for the advise Aurelia.

I've got them both harnesses which they are now used to wearing so will try them on those first, but like you said I will be very very very careful. I've already paid for them to be spayed as soon as they are old enough, my vets won't do this until they are at least 4 months old or 2.5kgs so I'll book them both in whichever comes first, as much as I love kittens my lil girls wont be having any of their own :P

Hun, I'm not trying to pick at you I really am not ... but that's terrible advice 10-12 weeks is way way way too young to be going out. Even supervised, you know how quick they can move if they want to!

I would love to know though, how can you ever be sure a cat will come back to you? Even my girls who 99/100 times will come when called and their treats are jangled ... well there is always that one time, and that's all it takes when outdoors.

Out of interest, I know you live in South Africa, but do you live in a built up area or out in the country side? Cause that also has a bearing on different situations.

A breath of fresh air

I'd still wait for them being spayed first for the harness though But I think that's what you meant anyway?

Will go and have a look in a mo, but have you posted the obligatory pictures yet?

I live in a very quiet street in a cul-de-sac and my cats are the only cats in my street that I have seen here. People mostly only have dogs in my area.

Yep I know how fast they move but don't seem to have problems with it. Amy and lynx were brought up the same way.

I call all my cats by my name, since they only respond to that and use the mouse wand stick to entice them and the other toys.

Everyone has their different ways of doing things. (Had the same response to the way I brought up my german shepherd litter pups on the veranda and took them on the grass for the toilet and running around)

So no offense taken from your comment.
