Has having cats put you off having human babies?

Slightly following on from Skittles thread ...

I am getting married next year and, me being in my thirties, EVERYONE keeps saying to me 'oh good now you can have babies'.

My answer to this usually is 'I already have babies' but they say the cats dont count!

When I think about it, all I can think of are things like .... what if it upsets the cats, what if the child lets them out, what if the child is allergic to the cats, what if the cats are allergic to the child, what if they dont get on, what if the cats feel left out ...... and on it goes.

Also when I was asking my fiance the other day how he felt about having a baby, the first thing he said was 'what if it lets the cats out' haha

We have Alfie instead of kids neither of us wanted them but we both fell in love with Alfie and he gets all the love and fuss he wants instead.... of course you still get the questions from friends and relatives... so when are you having kids..... easy answer.... we aren't...EVER! I would prefer to fill my house with animals!!!!

Re: Has having cats put you off having human babies?

Having cats didn't put me off wanting human babies - other folks babies did that!!!

To be honest, I have NEVER EVER wanted kids, from the age of 16 I have always been adamant about this and it has never changed.

My cats ARE my babies in every possible way. I worry about them the way other parents worry about their children. I miss them terribly when I go on holiday or even just to work. They are the first ones I speak to when I get home at night, even if the OH is already home before me. I monitor everything about them to ensure they are well and want for nothing.

My cats are my world and anyone who knows me knows that. When I first met my OH, all I ever got asked by other folks was "How does he get on with the cats?"

My OH would never make me try to choose between him or the cats because he knows he would be the loser and that I wouldn't even take a split second to make the decision!!

Forget what anyone else says and do what works for your family unit. It is no one else's business either way.

In my experience cats and kids work together very well and it does not have to be a choice of one or another. Plenty of households have both and works regardless of who was there first!.

Kids do not automatically do stupid things around cats as they grow up learning what should/shouldn't be done. Cats also learn how to be gentle around kids -I think they understand that they are little two legged dudes or four legged when they are crawling.

In terms of love and attention, you will find there is plenty to go around.

However, if neither of you wants children then don't have them, and tell everyone who tries to convince you otherwise to bog off! Simple as that!

Re: Has having cats put you off having human babies?

I always had a strong desire to be a mother and nothing short of a 100% chance of passing on some horrible genetic condition would have put me off having children.

Not everyone has that desire, I get that.

Re: Has having cats put you off having human babies?

I always wanted children and had my 2 lovely girls. However the fur babies make our family unit complete. Besides when the girls leave the nest I will still have these 4 to fuss and love over, and theres nothing they can do about it!!!

Re: Has having cats put you off having human babies?

Like you, Moggy, I've never, ever wanted children. Imagine that, and living in Italy After 12 years together, my other half and I finally got married 2 years ago. Everyone assumed that it was because we wanted to start a family, when in fact it was so I could get an Italian social security number

The neighbours look aghast when I say we've go 2 cats and a motorbike and a child wouldn't fit in! I'll be 47 next November, so I don't know why they think I'm on the point of changing my mind about it all.

Re: Has having cats put you off having human babies?

I think we got Molly as a substitute baby

We got together far to late in life, and are now both too old to have a family together, so we treat Molly as our baby.

Re: Has having cats put you off having human babies?

Can't really comment as our 2 human babies arrived before the dog then the cat! Of course my human babies are far more important than any animal baby but I wouldn't be without any of them

The love you feel for your own child is of a completely different magnitude
