Re: I have my cat of 16 yrs put down - did I do the right thing?

what else could you have done - leave her to a few more weeks of pain?

are you concerned you left it too late? only you know how she was daily and you would have been able to say when was enough- guided by your vet.

My own cat was pts recently, she had an inoperable tumour in her stomach - we didn't go to heroic lengths to prolong her life, and when she said she was getting miserable, we ended it for her.

I think you went as far, and if anything further, than you needed to for Bronte and that you had to let her go when you did, as things were getting nasty for her.

I strongly believe that cats tell you exactly when the day has come, by their behaviour, their expression, and if they have had enough, they are lucky in that as an owner we can say we understand, and help them out of their pain.

Bunny went on the day she said i am not very comfortable - i might have squeezed a few more weeks out of her, with excessive pain relief, but i chose to let her go before it got bad for her. For me that was a decision i am happy with, she was 17, i had her 14 years. She was eating not very well on the day before, her tummy was getting bigger, so the tumour was causing some pressure, making it uncomfortable for her to sleep, it was time to call it.

I am sure Bronte understood and welcomed a dignified ending to her life, so don't be hard on yourself, it would have been much worse to leave her to suffer unnecessary pain and trauma.

She would thank you if she could.

You made the decision she couldn't make herself.

Also, yes euthanasia is not acceptable in humans because it is too easily taken advantage of e.g. people having people euthanised for their own gain. It would be great if it was legal but only if there was no way of taking advantage of it.
whereas in animals there is very little to gain by euthanasia and it is only usually used in a bad way when the animal is PTS without good reason such as not enough room in the rescue centre etc. but in this case your little cat was PTS for her own benefit.

anyway as I was saying

you allowed her to die peacefully and with dignity you gave her a beautiful life and the most dignified death. You have done all you can for you little baby, she was there for you in your times of need and you've been there for her throughout her illness. . .and you've done the best thing possible by ending it before it became unbearable for her. . .like a lot of humans would probably like to have the option of doing.
you would have regretted not doing it if she had taken ill and had been clearly in a lot of pain and then you had to actually wait for a vet to come and put her to sleep so the time was right. She didn't have to go through the fear and pain she could have potentially faced.

One day in the hopefully very distant future we will all be able to visit rainbow bridge and be reunited with our animals we have lost over the years. I'm sure a lot of us will be reunited by big crowds of excited animals all wanting a big cuddle and others will be reunited with a few animals that are just as special and it will be absolutely lovely

please never doubt yourself. You did the right thing.
I couldnt agree more with this post.

I am sorry for your loss....run free at the bridge Bronte
Hold on tight to your memories

Kelly xx

Re: I have my cat of 16 yrs put down - did I do the right thing?

I've seen your photos and what a gorgeous cat!!!!!!!

Well done for making such a hard decision, about 5 years ago I had my 15 year old boy put down, I'd had him since before my teens so he'd "supported" me through exams, first boyfriends and crushes and heartbreaks, going to uni etc etc.. So completely understand your heartbreak over making such a choice.

Monty was healthy throughout his life, only ever wrenching a claw once that made him need to see the vets. He only became ill shortly before being pts and in the last week we made him all his favourite foods to encourage him to eat (he weighed a very healthy stone at his peak!) and he lost weight rapidly but his abdomen stayed rather large, which to me meant the worst .

On the morning that I decided he had to go to the vets he came upstairs, something he hadn't done for about a week, he struggled to jump on my bed and then lay watching me (I honestly can't remember what I was doing just remember looking back at him) and purring. I swear he was asking me to help him and thinking back on how he purred the whole way to the vets I felt like he knew I was trying to help (he hated the carrier and used to yowl when put in it), he was even purring as the vet gave him a sedative and kept looking at me the whole time (after the sedative the vet drew a syringe of fluid from his abdomen, it was blood and she could feel a mass on his spleen). I felt awful but somehow knew I'd at least done the right thing by giving him peace, painless sleep and had done the last favour for him that I owed him which was staying with him until the end.

It's not an easy choice to make, it never is, never will be and it will never NOT hurt. BUT you can take comfort in knowing that your lovely animal would rather be free of pain and able to love you and be aware of everything it can do rather than hurting and not being able to love you back.

All the best and don't worry!!!

that is such a heartbreaking but also lovely story. . . I agree he was asking for your help and knew exactly what you were doing when you went to the vets bless him! He'll be playing with Bronte at Rainbow Bridge

In a word, yes. I think you did. It would be nice to believe that natural deaths are gentle and peaceful but this is, at least in my experience, often very far from the truth. Given her ailments and age, with no chance for recovery, you spared Bronte the possibility of wasting away in pain. She came first and that is love.

Re: I have my cat of 16 yrs put down - did I do the right thing?

Yes you did the right thing--most certainly.
In the last 2 years I have had to make that hearbreaking decision about 3 of my cats---one was just 14,and the other 2,16.Kidney failure and heart failure.
It tore me to shreds, but i knew it was the kindest thing to do.
I was with them all,all the way through--i am a vets assistant, and they all died in my arms--the last voice they heard was mine--the last kiss as they drifted way was mine.It broke my heart--as it always does when this happens.
I felt the same quilt, even though i see it every day--but it was the right and painless way to relieve them of there suffering. The pain that we are left with at losing them,is the hardest pain.
I have a little graveyard in my garden, where i visit them, and remember them--i know that one day i shall be with them again.Try to keep that thought always with you.xxxxx

Re: I have my cat of 16 yrs put down - did I do the right thing?

thank you all for your comments. On reflection it probably was the right time for Bronte but I could also see that she was a fighter and she would have just kept on going had she been given the choice. Unfortunately, cats don't realise the extent of the illness they have and they can't foresee what might happen to them. She would have gone on until she stopped eating completely and no doubt would have starved to death. She also had a heart murmur on the last checkup so her condition was obviously getting much worse.

As pet owners the decision pts is a hard one and has to be considered carefully. It's not really a decision that I would like to make again.

I have to look at the flip side and think to myself what might have happened if we left it too late. She would have been in a lot of pain and scared. It would have been a worse ending for all of us.
