How to get cat to 'go' outside??

Hi there,

i have been trying to encurage Dexter to go toilet outside but its not working so far. I have been putting the litter tray outside during the day and i have put some cat litter under one of the bushes but he always uses the tray during the day and when i bring it back in at night.

What should i be doing?? i dont want to have to be cleaning a stinky littler tray for ever

Any advice would be great

Well, IMO, cleaning up after a pet is all part and parcel of owning pets. Let him go in his litter box in the house. Better that than in the neighbour's garden.

Cats want to go where they feel safe. If he doesnt feel safe going outside, then he will want to go inside.

Have your tried changing the litter? I don't have a 'stinky' litter tray and I have two boys who only go inside.

I don't think the OP meant the litter tray actually smelled I think they were just trying to put it politely that they didn't want to be cleaning up poo and wee all the time

my cat goes in exactly the same spot in the garden all the time and my dad gets a shovel and puts the poop in a bag in the bin so it's the equivalent to an outdoor litter tray but she refuses to use a litter tray unless it's her very very last resort (I found when I stole her and kept her in my flat at university for 4 days )

Re: How to get cat to 'go' outside??

As already said.Litter trays are part of having cats.I had a semi feral cat who eventually moved in and became a house cat.He lived in a heated shed in the garden before moving in and was shut in there at night with a tray.Once he moved in he used to go for a wander ,come home to use his tray in the house and then go off out again.Even if your cat does start to "toilet" outside he will always need a tray inside for over night/wet days or days when he cant get out quickly enough.

I would like to point i here that i go through the litter tray at least 3 times a day and change the litter completly ever 3-4 days!!!

Ok i was just asking because I have was brought up having cats (parents still have 4) and they dont have litter trays and once they were used to going outside my parents started putting the tray outside and under the bushes and then eventualy got rid ot the tray. I was just wondering if there was anything else i could do to encurage him to go outside.

I actually meant change the brand of litter in my first post, not the actual litter

Yes i see that What brand do you use? i am not sure if its the litter that is the problem or my stinky kitten, lol

I dont have that much of a problem with the changing of the tray but like i say in my last post i am not used to cats having a litter tray for a long time. i am sure by this age the other cats went outside.
