Should I get a male or a female kitten?

Hi, I am going to look at some kittens this weekend in the hope of getting one as a friend for my 2 year old female cat.
Both cats will be indoor cats, but my big question that I need some advice on is should I get a male or a female kitten?
My female cat is spayed and of course the new kitten would be too as soon as they are old enough but I'm just not sure which one would be best to get.
On one hand perhaps 2 females would fight for who's queen of the house, but likewise I am worried that a male cat would be much bigger and therefore make my female cat feel more threatened.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Re: Should I get a male or a female kitten?

Males aren't necessarily bigger or stronger than female cats. My female is the same size as my male weightwise, but she is definitely more muscular and can easily beat him up if she wants to (he is a hopeless fighter) From personal experience, male cats do tend to be more affectionate than females, who I have found to be more aloof and independent. However, this is purely my own experience. I don't think the gender matters as much as the individual character of the new cat. But I would personally go for a boy (because I LOVE my boy)
Good luck and thank you for being a responsible cat slave and neutering/spaying your kitties.

I have 2 of each sex. imo there is nothing to choose between them. If you chose the right one they will be equally loving and affectionate regardless of gender. Be sure to have it spayed/neutered though.

My boy is 8 and i have 2 girls, 5 and 2ish! My boy is the most vocal, he always tells me about his day and of the three he is the lapcat. My girls are very feline, they like affection but on their terms.

Re: Should I get a male or a female kitten?

If boys are indeed more affectionate (my current cat is also typically feline - affectionate when she wants to be), will this upset my current cat, seeing us being more affectionate with the kitten?
My primary concern when deciding what to get is for my current cat - I love her to bits and want to make this whole process the least stressful for her that it possibly can be.

Re: Should I get a male or a female kitten?

Obviously each cat has it's own individual personality but as a sweeping generalisation I have found females to be more territorial and highly strung therefore if it were me I would probably be looking at getting a male to minimise the likelihood of future conflict.

I doubt this would be a major problem. My boy is the "jealous" one, and I have to be subtle about showing affection to the two girls when he is near. But the females don't seem to mind when he hangs around me or sits on my lap. I think they see him as a bit of a little Lord Fauntleroy.. a "mommy's boy".

I would say that gender matters least - go and see the whole litter, and go for the kitten that seems "right".

Last time we were going to see a blue boy... and ended up with a lilac girl who walked straight up my daughters leg.

Re: Should I get a male or a female kitten?

I have 3 girls and 1 boy. The girls are just as affectionate as the boys. If I want a hug from the girls they come, not so much from the independant male. My moms cat lynx actually waits on the bed for my mom to come and sleep.

So in my experience girls are more affectionate and come when we need them. They also get along just as well as males.

The age of the subjects in the introductions matter more than the genders.

Disclaimer: Forgot to add they all sleep on me at the same time so they don't fight for positions and they welfare cats.

Re: Should I get a male or a female kitten?

Thank you for all your replies, it seems that it doesn't matter too much as to which gender we get, just more about the kitten's personality and how we introduce them.
We are going to choose it tomorrow, but we won't be picking the kitten up for another 3 weeks so now starts my research on the best process for integrating them!
