Smile New Kitten [Update]

Hey everyone,

So I posted about an RSPCA House Check the other day and I'm pleased to say that we now are the proud owners of a tiny little kitten! So far everything is going well - I swear she hasn't stopped purring since we brought her home and she constantly tries to nuzzle our hands! We've set her up in the kitchen with everything she needs and she seems happy. I've been really surprised how sociable and fearless she is, especially given the fact that not only does she come from a litter that was found abandoned in a shed at a very young age, but she also has feline muscular dystrophy in her hind legs which means she wobbles a lot and occasionally falls over - it is adorable to watch! Needless to say, she is quite a character!

At the moment we are keeping the new kitten (10/11 weeks old) and our resident kitten (7/8 months old) separated but there is a big enough gap under the door that they can smell each other and possibly see each others paws. Our resident kitten has hissed and growled a bit but she is acting completely normal around the house otherwise. The plan is to keep them fully separated for another day or so before introducing them via a cat carrier and taking it from there. I'm really paranoid about making sure things go as smoothly as possible so I think taking things slowly is probably the best way forward.

One problem we are having with the new kitten is that although she has successfully used the litter box to poop, as of yet she hasn't really managed to pee in there too (I say 'really' because she has tried and managed a few drops but that's it). She has however peed about two or three times outside of the box. Luckily the floor is tiled so its easy to clean up but I'm not too sure how to go about getting her to pee in the box. Our resident kitten has never peed outside of hers in the whole time we've had her so this is an entirely new problem for us! However I'm thinking that perhaps the new kitten is still getting her bearings so to speak and will manage to go in the box sooner or later. There is also the possibility that she finds peeing a little hard because of her muscle problems - having said that, although I've only witnessed her peeing once, she didn't look uncomfortable and oh boy was it a decent sized wee for such a tiny thing! Any further advice/suggestions would be excellent.

Anyway, I'll try and take a pic or two to share! I just wanted to say that visiting this forum has been a real comfort during the last couple of weeks! Thanks.

(P.S. sorry for the essay!)

Re: New Kitten [Update]

Delighted to hear that everything went well and you now have your new baby. What is her name? And also that of your older kitten?

I can't really comment of the weeing problem - it could be a few things - possible related to her problem, or maybe a bit too much litter in the tray and she can't balance properly on it or she can smell your other cat in the kitchen and is trying to mask it with her smell.......

I'm sure someone will be along VERY soon who is better placed to help with an answer.

Looking forward to seeing the piccies and I hope your introduction goes nice & smoothly.

Re: New Kitten [Update]

try a second shallower tray that it's easy for her to hop in and out with a smooth ish litter/only small amount so she can balance easier?

may be worth a go

Thanks for the quick replies! I haven't got a second tray available at the moment, but for the time being I will definitely try taking some of the litter out. She does find it difficult to stand in there but I kinda thought she'd want deep litter to bury her doings.

As she is still little, I don't think her 'doings' will be too big so hopefully she won't try to bury them too deeply.

What sort of litter are you using? If it is too lumpy - say wood pellets for example - she might be having a bit of a difficult time with staying upright & squatting. Think how we ladies feel when we use a public loo and refuse to sit on the seat - maybe she's got a little bit of that going on.
