Microchip Cat Flap Advice

We have a stray cat that we adopted (Harley) that we're about to let back outside after she's adjusted to the house, so am currently looking at cat flaps.

We plan to get a kitten next year too, so want a flap that will allow Harley out, but not let the kitten out...
Been looking at the PetPorte but it seems that it will allow any cat out and only blocks cats on the way in, which is not ideal!

Does anyone know if there is a flap that allows one to exit but not the other? I'd hate to have to lock Harley in for the kitten's sake...

Not sure if Sureflap works the same way, but you could try checking. I suspect both might work along similar lines though.

Yeah, looked into the sureflap too and thats the same Seems silly that nobody has thought that someone would want this!

Are there any other microchip flaps?

Re: Microchip Cat Flap Advice

You can get magnetic ones.

Put a magnet thingy on their colar and that lets them in and out but prevents other cats getting in or out.

But having said that, my mum had this option and the magnet thing fell off his collar and he couldnt get in again.

So you would have to make sure it was on well.

Yeah, i've seen them, but heard the same things... I don't want them to lose the magnet and be trapped outside, which is why the microchip door seems the best option

Re: Microchip Cat Flap Advice

I have indoor cats so dont know much about cat flaps of any kind, but my worry would be that no matter which one you used, surely there is always the chance that a kitten will be able to escape out the flap either in front or behind the cat that triggers the opening of the flap.As I say i have no knowledge maybe this cant happen.

Re: Microchip Cat Flap Advice

Buffie is correct that even if you were (for example as I have heard of some people doing this) to put one of the microchip flaps on backwards so that it scanned chips on the way out, there is always a certain time where the lock is open to allow the cat through and if another cat is fast enough it can tag along. This hasn't actually happened with mine so far but then a curious kitten might be a different story if it is desperate to follow the older cat.
