Question Would this be best for cat? Or am I interfering?

Not that I would ever interfere when it comes to animals

On Monday, I'm picking up a friend's, son's cat to be spayed and microchipped.

I have arranged for rescue to pay for both, as doubt there will be donation forthcoming. A few weeks ago cat was about to be given back to previous owner (who has it's mother ) but is now being kept ... but for how long?

I will need to give vet nurse owners details for chip, but wondering if I should give them my number too, as I know friend's son isn't very reliable
Been in a few flats, doubt they will bother to update details etc.

I think owner would be fine with this, doubt they would be bothered really.
If cat did end up with me, I would be able to keep her until rescue friends could help re-home her ... or probably keep her myself once she got paws under table ... even though she isn't black

What would you do?

*Going to try and chase the mother cat up and can get her booked in too if not already done*

Re: Would this be best for cat? Or am I interfering?

I'd have my information put on the chip and, given the circumstances, I wouldn't really care if the owners were upset by it.

Thank you

Maybe I will not ask, simply say in a matter of fact way that I'll do it as back up ... as I walk out the door with cat in basket! That way they won't have a chance to argue

Re: Would this be best for cat? Or am I interfering?

I think if it were me, if I had any doubt about the cat's future, I would put my number on the chip and not tell the owners.

Sometimes you have to do things in the interest of the animal, as some humans are just beyond being resonable and treat everything as a dispensible possesion of the moment.

I just regret not being able to catch my neighbours kitten before they moved as I am sure she has had a second litter by now (she would be around 15 months old!)

Re: Would this be best for cat? Or am I interfering?

I wouldn't even bother putting you on as back up.... just get it chipped fully in your name. If your the one taking the responsibility to get the kitteh chipped and spayed due to the owner not really caring then why would they care if their cat went missing??

I was actually just thinking "what if you just didn't return the cat after, how long would it be before they asked where she was?"

Just put your details 'by accident'

If he makes a fuss just say you got confused about whose details they were asking for :P

Exactly, I often pretend I am (or maybe I'm not pretending ) a little bit dimwitted and then I just say "Oh dear, sorry, I got confused...". People feel a bit sorry for you and then let it go. Helps me a lot in day-to-day situations. Sometimes you have to be a bit ruthless.
