first post-flea trouble

hello everybody. My name is shauna n we own a beautiful cat called scruffles. He will be one next month. I forgot to flea him n now he has the dreaded things. I gave him a tablet of 4fleas n spot on stuff this am. Sprayed the house n have hoovered our bed n changed the bed clothes as that's where he spends most time. Anyhow when i gave him his tablet he went mad with self grooming. Is this normal. How long does it take to get rid of them n how do i know when they've gone? I feel awful that he's got them. I consider him my 3rd child. What is the best treatment? Should i try to bathe him. Sorry for all the questions but i've never had a pet and i want to do my best for him. Thanks in advance. Look forward to getting to know you all

Re: first post-flea trouble

Hi and welcome to the forum.Fleas horrible little B*****s .The tablet you have given your cat is a new one to me,I just gooled it .I assume it is the one by Johnsons.I doubt whether this will be of any use in getting rid of your cats fleas.Which spot on did you use.TBH Im not sure you should have used both at the same time, someone may be along soon with more knowledge. There really is nothing that will be effective that you can buy without a prescription or from your vet, some can even be dangerous. It may be an idea to ring your vet and ask whether what you have given him is safe to be used together.Remember that although some of the "spot on" flea treatments can help with fleas in the environment it is always best to treat your house too.Good luck

Re: first post-flea trouble

Depend what type of flea tablet you gave him. Believe it or not alot of store bought and over the counter flea treatments INCLUDING PET SHOPS treatments are toxic to cats and can be fatel.

I would recommend you go to the vets for a treatment. The best one apparently is advocate.

This is abit out of my price range myself so today *my cats have fleas it turns out* i have orded some effipro spot on treatment *4 pipets for £10* each will last for 4-6 weeks. You put the liquid in the pipet between their shoulders directly onto the skin.

The second thing i bought is Acclaim 2000 house spray. 12 monthes cover and will do a four bed house. This cost me £8.99.

*Both of these have p+p included*

You could also try putting a flea collar inside your hoover and give your house a thorough hoovering EVERYDAY! Curtains, under sofa etc aswell as the usual places.

Hope this helps

Re: first post-flea trouble

i also had this trouble, (even though my cat was on front line) i gave him a 4flea tablet and he went crazy! although it say's on the packet they may have a reaction, i watched him closely and they are reacting to the flea's dying a (hopefully) brutal death. if you see the flea's it's like they have a massive fit before dying, them running around doing this on the cat is why they react this way, the tablet's will kill the little critter's but if they have got into the carpet you will have a problem, pest control and in some area's the council can fumigate, i switched flea treatment from frontline to stronghold, brought a load of can's of Raid (the one's that kill cockroaches) and went to town on the house, and hoovered twice a day. all is now well, good luck!

Re: first post-flea trouble

Hi Victoria & welcome to the forum.

I tried the 4Cats flea treatment a couple of times but found it very ineffective. Never had a reaction like yours tho..... I had been using Frontline and that worked for about 4 years but then stopped. The result being a house riddled with damn fleas again. I then came across Advocate and I think it is bl**dy wonderful!!!!

It is a spot-on and appears to work very well. It also treats most types of worms (although a proper wormer is recommended every 3 mths) and ear-mites so is a good all round product. What I really liked the sound of, before I got it, was that it would also kill fleas in the areas around where the cat(s) frequent in the house. I had sprayed & de-fumigated but there always seemed to be a couple of fleas that managed to resist my extermination attempts and would let me know it!!! Since using the Advocate, I have not been bitten once nor seen any in the house AT ALL!!!!!!!

It might be a bit more expensive but what you pay for this you save on other products. Also, if you get a prescription from your vet, you can get some very good on-line prices.

I'm just adding to the discussion because I had previously had SUCH a terrible time getting rid of the wee blighters!!!
