hi
Not trying to contridict in any way shape of form, but in your opinion do you believe that ANY dog irrespective of age or breed can be taught to live with cats?

! know ex racing greyhounds can be rehomed with cats providing they have lived with them in the past.

Just intereted in your views here- both of mind are OK with my cat by the way but would NOT trust they with a strange cat. That said we have has two rescues here temporary in the past that both totally ignored my cats.

Re: 2nd cat killed by neighbours dogs in 2 months!!

I'm so sorry to hear about your cats.

Information from the DEFRA website -

"If your dog injures another person’s animal, or an owner of an animal reasonably believes that they could be injured if they intervened to protect their animal from your dog, then an offence may be committed."

I would speak to your local wardens and the police. Although the police are unlikely to prosecute they WILL talk to the owner. Also, it is your responsibility to report it so that if the dogs (*sigh* I really want to say owner) is a repeat offender then action will have to be taken.

Its a shame that the destruction order can't be taken out on the owner rather than the dogs, then some irresponsible idiots wouldn't have dogs in the first place.

These kind of posts really distress me. Do the owners care so little about their dogs that they will risk them being destroyed. The fact that the owner has shown no emotion whatsoever makes me wonder if these dogs have done it many times before.

The first thing that comes to mind is the Dangerous Dogs Act; however, I don't know whether a dog attacking and killing a cat would define it as a dangerous dog under the act. If it attacked a person, then a different story - it would be destroyed immediately. As much as I hate to see animals killed, there are times when it's absolutely necessary. Your best hope might be to portray the dogs as potentially very dangerous to people, as evidenced by the way they have attacked and killed your cats.

But the biggest problem appears to be your neighbour. Unfortunately, humane common sense seems rarely to apply to trash like that.
I agree I don't think the Dangerous Dogs Act covers the killing of another animal however you could ask your solicitor to write to her and present her with the vet bills - maybe then she will realise the seriousness of the situation.

I am so sorry that you have lost 2 kittys over this - I lost my springer in October last year because of a rescue boxer who mauled her (she was 10 yrs old) and like your cat Skye didn't even see the dog coming.

If only Patch and Angus has been killed so far, how long could it be before another pet goes the same way. I am afraid I would have to contact the police and see what they have to say. Lets face it, there has been an unlawfull killing of beloved pets

Re: 2nd cat killed by neighbours dogs in 2 months!!

This is awful, it has brought tears to my eyes.

I would talk to your local police and the rspca, her dogs are clearly a danger to others and something needs to be done.

And this lady absolutely has a responsibility for vet costs or at least contribute towards. Perhaps ask her if she will contribute for a cat run for your new cats as your are fearful of letting them out since her dogs are very aggressive.

I wonder how many times this has happened before.

Big hugs x

Not sure which appals me more, the attack or the totally irresponsible and unsympathetic attitude of the 'owners'. Dogs like this should not be allowed to roam free like this and it doesn't sound as if this is their first offence of this nature making it more unforgiveable.

Very sorry for your loss.

Re: 2nd cat killed by neighbours dogs in 2 months!!

Sadly in my job [I work in the prosecutions team of a Local Authority so deal with these type of cases on a regular basis]. It is quite a common reaction from dog owners, either they are incredibly verbal and aggressive or walk off without saying a word as if nothing had happened. I would say the responsible dog owner in these incidents that I see are in the minority

Ex racing greyhounds are harder work than most, but NOT a lost cause. Of course every dog is different and given their history of chasing small, fast moving furry things, their prey drive is immense, but, so was our Bella's.

She's an Alaskan Malamute, Bella the Malamute knows we saved her life!

When we rescued her(we say rescued, but not from a shelter, from her 3rd owner) we were told she was allowed to chase, catch and kill rabbits on the local common. Also, we could NOT have a cat around her because she would rip it apart.

It took me 2 weeks to get her to completely submit to the cat and get to be this cool around scruffy. As you can see.......

My best mate has a rescue staffie who's prey drive towards cats was just as bad, he is now completely cat friendly. Our other dog Harvey has been known to play with strange cats in our garden.

This pic proves just that.......

This is Teddy, maybe the 3rd or 4th time he came to our garden, and the only reason it took so long, is that Teddy had to trust Harvey and by then he knew Harv wasn't going to hurt him.
