Boys, girls or one of each?

Is it better to keep two boys, two girls or one of each? If we decided to get another cat as a companion for our existing female 3 year old cat are we better to get a girl or a boy or not bother and keep her on her own ?

Re: Boys, girls or one of each?

Really I dont think it makes much difference, it depends more on the personality of the cats.

It can be more difficult to introduce cats when they are older, but its not impossible.

Echo this - we introduced a second cat to our young adult girl, soon after getting her, and the advice from the RSPCA was that it didn't matter whether it was a girl or a boy, but the age of the kitten was important. The younger the kitten, the easier it would be to get the adult cat to accept it's presence. We ended up with a kitten that had been handed in to the RSPCA as abandoned, and brought him home when he was a bare eight weeks old..... it took just four days for the young adult cat to accept him.

That sounds really positive. Does anyone know if this is because they are not related. The reason is that our cat is a stray that adopted us and apparently left home because the owner kept two of her kittens.... A boy and a girl. We don't know if she left because they were her offspring or just because she disliked other cats !

She won't really have any concept of them being her kittens but may certainly be 'sick' of them after nursing them for however long.

Its one of those things that you dont know until you tryreally. Is she spayed now?

Again it really depends on the cat. Some prefer being the only cat, and some enjoy having a companion. Always something to try if you introduce them properly theres no reason she wont accept them.

Yes, I would like her to have company, but if she prefers to be on her own we will only find out if we try it and I don't want to frighten her away again! She already avoids and runs from the dogs i'll see how it goes. I won't try until we come back after our hols which will be at the end of august and it may be easier over winter when we can keep her in more !!!
