advice please - kitten eating cat litter

I brought my new kitten home last night.
He is very young.

When I put him in the litter tray, he tried to eat the litter.
It's a non-clumping silica gel one.

Every time I put him in he tried to eat it, so I put a layer of the litter I use for my rabbits on the top - non clumping wood litter.
He tried to eat that as well.

Any tips on how to get him to stop trying to eat it?
Or what litter I can use instead that he won't eat?

Scared to leave the house in case I come back to a poorly impacted kitten or something

Re: advice please - kitten eating cat litter

How old is the kitten?
I don't have too much experience with cats but I started the litter training with my kittens at 3.5 weeks. By around 4.5-5 weeks they were completely litter trained. They did try to eat the litter in the beginning.... They don't know what it is for if the litter try doesn't smell of poop and pee. If your kitten had an accident somewhere else scoop that up and put it in the litter tray - keep an eye on the kitten, if you hear it is scratching in a corner, get it in the tray and gently make it dig with its paw. Also, do this after every meal, 30 mins after a meal, and after it slept.
Be patient and diligent, and your furry friend will learn how to use the tray and not to eat the litter

I asked because I wanted to use the same, but they were on a litter from jollyes and I don't have one of those near me (i don't drive)

How do you not know how old he is?

Where is he from? If he is from someone who bred their cats, they will know, or a rescue will tell you?

Re: advice please - kitten eating cat litter

I would just use the pellets for now or torn up newspaper, but book him in on monday to see the vet for a general health check and age guesstimate.

Re: advice please - kitten eating cat litter

The kitten I'm guessing was brought indoors after the mother died but there are plenty of cats on farms and stables that live out 24/7 and if thats the situation then the kitten would have been born outside and raised outdoors until the mother died and only got taken indoors then hence being litter trained but this is purely guess work from what the OP has said.

Honestly, I can see all that, but if I was in that situation I would have them at a vet, vaccinated, and at least give an estimate of age before rehoming any kittens.

Yes but that's you, to be honest if it was on a farm the blighter is lucky to have been brought in as many would have left him to nature.
