Re: advice please - kitten eating cat litter

I think taking them to a vet for an estimate of age for vaccinations is a good idea though

and as far as the kitty litter goes I'm not sure my cat does her business outside and then comes back in so I don't have much experience with that and I was too young when she was a kitten to remember what we did with her so sorry about that

Well thats another issue as I would be wanting them all neutered, but again, just me.

i'm sure all the kittens from the litter will be neutered but farm cats are usually quite feral aren't they and have to be caught in humane cat traps to then cart them off to be neutered. . . the chances of getting them all is slim . . . this might have been done in the past but any that aren't caught continue to breed and they also attract more cats anyway . . . so it's usually a very difficult thing to get on top of. . .

Farmers can see cats as part of the 'livestock' and they are there to do a job and they get sort of fed and watered but no more than that, we had farm cats growing up and they were treated very differently to our family cats and that is sadly just a fact of life, many rescue centres depend on farms and stables taking on feral kittens and they aren't often neutered to my knowledge.

Re: advice please - kitten eating cat litter

sometimes farms have colonies of feral cats (as I said above) so they're not really pets and have sometimes just gathered there themselves (or there is an agreement with the farm and rescue centres as GreyHare said) so they don't actually belong to anyone. . .so by paying to have every single one neutered would put the owner of the farm out of pocket and this is when people like the cats protection get involved. . .

I think the ones that come from rescues are usually neutered because they don't want to make more work for themselves in the future but they do attract other cats that are homeless. . .which may have not been neutered. . .they can join the colony and then breed with any other ones that haven't been "done" too

Re: advice please - kitten eating cat litter

thanks for the kind words everyone

i don't want anyone thinking she's a bad person or anything, it was just a situation that got out of hand and she is doing her best to fix it now.
she already spoke to the vet about neutering the kittens she is keeping and is finding good homes for the ones she isn't.

Glo Worm if the cat was born outside as they sound like farm cats then I guess the original owner wouldn't know how old he was but it's done now rightly or wrongly so no point giving the OP a hard time over it.
Cheers, I will remove the litter and just use newspaper for now I think.

I put him in the tray after he had eaten, he swiftly got out, walked round the side of my bed and did a poop on the floor. Lovely

Yes, I think that's what happened, she just wanted to keep the kittens safe. She was doing the best in the situation that she was in.

Re: advice please - kitten eating cat litter

I think you need to keep kitten fairly confined near their litter tray or have several dotted about the house until they get the idea, if they wee in it leave it in there so they can smell that that is where they are meant to go and clean any areas where they have had an accident with bio-logigal washing powder or a specialist cleaner like Simple solution, because they will keep going where they smell they have been.
