Litter trays?

Cassie has a nasty habit of peeing over the sides of a normal litter tray (No matter how deep it is!)
We have a covered tray but she piddles up the sides of it, and when you take the lid off it drips everywhere

Are the litter trays with rims any good at stopping them peeing out of the box? Or am I better off trying to find a better designed enclosed box?

Re: Litter trays?

Never seen that happen before with my cats.

Has she been checked for health issues and have you tried other cat litter? I use the normal trays with curved edge at the top, the trays are sort of oval shape.

Was the tray covered all the time or were you just testing? maybe she hates covered trays if its the first answer

I've noticed when Biffy peed right in front of me, he put one of his back legs up on the rim, looked very casual lol. I don't know if girl cats would do that or if its blokey.

Maybe lidded is the best answer, you could swipe around with some kitchen roll before taking the lid off to avoid drippage?

Re: Litter trays?

She came to me (nearly a year ago) with a hooded tray because according to her previous owner she's always pee'd over the edges of her trays
We carried on using her tray but it does make an awful mess when you lift the lid off. I've tried wiping around the edges and covering the floor in towels but it still gets everywhere
I've never seen her peeing, but when she had to be on cage rest with her bad leg she was getting pee EVERYWHERE! (the covered tray wouldn't fit in the cage with her so she had to use a standard one) I had to cover the half of the cage that had the tray in with bin bags as she must be nearly standing up to do it! Her pee even smells male, I'm sure she's confused LOL (She's a tortie and I've checked, definitely no nuts!)
I need to buy a new litter tray for her anyway as the door on her covered tray is on it's last legs, so I wondered if the deep trays with rims on would be any better (I'm not sure how deep they are) Or if anyone else has a litter tray sprayer that can recommend a better covered tray that doesnt collect pools of pee around the edges where the lid clips on?

I have never had a problem with Meeko(male) peeing over the edge of his tray.He has this one Litter Tray by Clean 'n' Tidy | Pets at Home He is a big lad so I think for safety's sake I'm going to get him the Jumbo size, but at the moment he is fine with the large one.

What's the deepest you've tried? It can be worthwhile looking at cheap plastic storage boxes as you have much more choice on size & depth. I have one very large cat and had the same problem. He's much happier in an open tray about 10 inches deep.

Re: Litter trays?

I would agree with Havoc's suggestion, I have trays with the rims but slightly different to the ones Buffy linked to with are good for squatters but if she is peeing standing up then I would guess it would just flow over the side.

Re: Litter trays?

Big plastic box sounds good to me, unless she's defying gravity and peeing straight upwards??? What kind of litter are you using?

Re: Litter trays?

Better pee than poop. The Flea often gets it wrong and poops down the sides. usually on freshly washed and changed tray....

The open top tray she was using in the cage is 8" deep, so her backside must be quite a way off the floor for her to pee over the edge
I tried using a storage tub but although Wabbit would use it, Cassie used to look at it and walk away. She has however used an open tray that was in the bath ready to be cleaned (I know it was her because there was pee UNDER the tray not in it ) so I imagine she would jump into a large box if she was desperate enough.

The litter I'm using is Cats Best Oko Plus.
