Skydiving Cat?

Can anyone help me as I cannot believe my cat's antics!

My OH and I work all day and therefore Squeak stays indoors during the day and goes out to play in the evening when we get home.

We normally leave our bathroom window slightly open (first floor) to get some air in the house.

Well OH came home from work yesterday afternoon and could not find Squeak anywhere. He opened the back door and there was Squeak playing in the garden without a care in the world.

Is it possible that cats can fall/jump from 1st floor windows without trauma and is this normal. There would have been no way that he could have jumped down to break his fall as it is literally like the North face of the Eiger...

I could not believe it!

Re: Skydiving Cat?

was there nothing opened on the bottom floor? and sure squeak didn't get out when you left for work? sometimes they are quiet fast you don't even notice them escaping.

Re: Skydiving Cat?

When I was younger, we had a cat who used to jump out of the first floor window somewhat regularly but he was bit weird.

After he jumped, he sat there for about 20 seconds as if the jump stung a bit (you know that feeling you get in your shins if you land hard from a jump? I always imagined that's what it was like for him) and then he'd run to the front door. He hated being outside, but loved that he could escape if he wanted to.
Etienne and MoggyBaby like this.

Re: Skydiving Cat?

Yes, they definely can! It's all to do with cats landing on their feet!

One of my neighbours came to me quite shocked and concerned to tell me one of mine had jumped out her first floor window! Minutes earlier he'd strolled in home without a care in the world-I'd never has know about it otherwise.

Re: Skydiving Cat?

They discussed something similar on an episode of QI. Apparently they looked at a lot of data that was reported about Cat's falling out of windows and determined that it's actually 'better' for cat's to fall from a higher height.

The study was done in New York and they found that rates of injuries increased up until the 7th floor. From the 7th floor up to the 32nd floor the survival rate was 95%, while the survival rate of cats that fell 2 to 6 stories was 90% !

Apparently, the THEORY is that once they reach terminal velocity they spread themselves out and slow their descent
