I was really surprised to see that Shelters actually put animals to sleep if they do not get adopted after a while. I mean, it was kind of foolish of me but I was really surprised..

I don't get it, they make it difficult for people to adopt yet they're putting cats to sleep all the time?

I'm no pet owner, nor am I experienced with this side of the 'business' but so many people go around saying 'adopt' don't buy yet they are so many breeders? Aren't they just creating more problems?

I don't mean to sound harsh, I'm just confused, thanks to anyone who clears this up for me

Alot of breeders also like to show thier cats too, and they work hard to create their on line of cats if you see what i mean. but its a very good point you have made. why dont you become a cat owner, you wont regret it ........best wishes..................chris.

But unfortunately I'm still young and financially I don't think I'd be able to afford it. I've set my mind to adopting an oldie though, the cat would be much better in my home rather than being put to sleep IMO. I also read that some cattery's give you vouchers and help you pay vet bills etc.

On Tuesday I'll be visiting two shelters hopefully; if they are going to help me financially I'd love to adopt one otherwise I wouldn't be too sure.

I'm so excited, but then frustrated too. It's a cruel world we live in

Yeah, that's why I want to go for an Oldie too. They're in much more need of a home then a kitten who could find a home easily.
They have also been vaccinated etc, unless they need booster shots? Not sure about that Hopefully the neutering and all would be done too.

Ah well, we'll just have to see! I'm pretty excited

Older cats get put up for adoption because people's living conditions change (death, moving to accomodation that does not allow pets etc). It is sad that they get put to sleep but most people want kittens because they don't come with any 'baggage'and are seen as being more fun.
It is very thoughtful of you to want to adopt an older cat and I wish you all the best in finding one that is suitable when you are able.
Cats have a reputation for being aloof but they can be just as devoted as dogs.

Thanks for replies, from these forums I kind of noticed that Animal-Lovers are really compassionate people, kind of shows something I guess or maybe it's just me.
