Bengal Attack

Hi everyone, I am really in need of some advice. We have recently moved and I have just started to let my Bengal cat outside. Unfortunately on the 2nd day of freedom he attacked two cats and I had to seperate him. I have kept him in the house since but he is now very loud and constantly looking for ways to escape. I dont believe in keeping pets caged up if they do have the opportunity to experience the outside, I would love to let him out but I am worried I will not be there if he chooses to start on another animal in our area. If there anything I can do to make him less angry?

Re: Bengal Attack

Is your cat neutered?

There's been a few stories on these forums of Bengals attacking other cats, and it sounds as if they can be pretty fierce. How about a large cat-pen for yours, with climbing frames inside, so he can roam but not terrorise your new neighbourhood?

I agree as everyone will be safe, I would be worried about my Scamp if there was a Bengal loose near me as they are so big

Re: Bengal Attack

You could cat-proof your garden or as somebody else suggested, build a cat run where you can pop him out and he can enjoy the sun and the fresh air but not roam! It's not fair on other neighbour's or their cats to let your cat roam, especially considering Bengals are very territorial. Most breeders would sell to an indoor only home, did you get yours from a proper breeder?

Re: Bengal Attack

Hi,

5th generation or later Bengals should not be fierce, their reputation as such is not quite deserved in my view Though of course all cats are different, and you get some that are more placid/more aggressive with whatever breed or moggy you have!

I have two Bengals, although they are only kittens, but have researched the breed thoroughly and been in touch with lots of different breeders, so I have quite a good idea what I'm talking about

My advice would be to definitely neuter him if he isn't already, and to provide access to the outdoors via a large cat pen. I have three moggies as well, and although they are allowed freedom to roam outside as they wish during the day (I live in a rural area away from main roads), I am going to do this for the kittens, as I am concerned about them being stolen - there are too many instances of this happening with pedigrees nowadays

Sorry to hear about your cat I too had a cat that would terrorize the neighbourhood and I couldn't let him out he would chase every cat and he was a huge boy and he too was very vocal I decided to buy a cat harness and took him out during the early hours of the morning for half hour and then at night time half hour that seems to have done the trick he became happy and settled and accept that he is only allowed out twice a day.

hope this helps

Re: Bengal Attack

Sorry to tell you but who ever sold you your Bengal should have told you that they should never be let to roam outside. They are a new breed and as such still carry wild traits. What you witnessed are some of those wild traits.

Please either get a cat run built for your Bengal, or cat proof your garden ... or of course keep him inside.

Ownedbycats ~ 5th, 10th, 20th generation Bengals will all still have wild traits. It's been hundreds of years since cats became domesticated. In all that time the traits cats have to hunt has never been diminished, so the ALC's wild traits in a Bengal have no chance of diminishing enough to not be a potential problem ... for a long time to come yet IMO.

Re: Bengal Attack

Hi. Sorry to disagree, what with being new here and all, the last thing I want to do is cause an argument So I am politely agreeing to disagree with you, Aurelia. I would never say that I am an expert of Bengal cats, but I have spoken to quite a few people who are, including breeders who have spent many years breeding and observing these cats, and I undertook hours of research on the internet before getting my Bengals. I would argue that their wild looking appearance and reputation make people think they are wild, but I would also argue that any cat can show wild traits from time to time.

I think the website "Animal World" sums Bengals up better than I can:

"The Bengal Cat personality is drawn from its domestic cat parentage. Despite its wild ancestry, the Bengal is an affectionate, sociable breed. This is provided that they are separated by at least 3 generations from the original crossing between a domestic and Asian Leopard Cat. Closer generations, 1st through 3rd generations, are considered "filial" and are used for breeding and specialized pet environments and are not considered domestic pet cats. The 4th generation and later Bengals are social, extroverted cats that love human companionship and like being part of whatever's going on. An energetic cat breed, they are are quite kittenish and enjoy playing games like fetch or hide and seek. They will often attach strongly to one person, demanding constant attention from that person.

The Bengal gets along with people, as well as dogs and other cats. This breed is lively, very playful, and enjoys interaction, making it a great cat for children. It is a great addition to families who have time to give it the attention it craves."

Re: Bengal Attack

As Aurelia said, Bengals are certainly an indoor only breed. They are fiercely territorial, and no good breeder will sell a Bengal to a home that will let them free roam.

Cat proof your garden or keep them indoors.
