Leaving cat with brother for a year? Opinions?

I may be going to university. If I do, I may leave my cat with my brother for a year (well, about ten-ish months probably in actuality). My brother doesn't live in the same house as me and hasn't seen my cat. If I do leave my cat with my brother, I'll take my cat down to his before I go off to uni, so my cat has chance to get used to him. My cat is generally scared of other humans - e.g. when someone came to the flat recently, Chico hid behind the couch, bless him. Chico's also very loyal and generally tries to follow me if I go out somewhere - I often have to chase him somewhere (he likes being chased and likes chasing me) and then hide before sneaking off. I've even deliberately took him for a walk before.

So knowing all this, what's your opinion on me leaving my cat with my bro? I'm worried he'll get really lonely, confused, and depressed, and think I've left him permanently... and that he'll even try to look for me and get lost.

My only issue with it would be that he will be confused at first, then he will get used to living with your brother, and then he will have to get used to living with you again, which is quite a bit of upheaval for him.

You say only for a year, would you take him with you to Uni for your second and third year? not many student places accept cats (well not many places in general) so what if you have to lave him for 3 years?

I've just literally completed a Postgraduate course and I was at home more than I was at Uni. To be honest I think he'd be better off staying with you (if that's an option?) even if you are out some of the time

The uni's miles away though - 8 hour megabus ride. So it's not like I can commute every day. And even if I could afford it, there are only 2 megabuses a day (one there and one back), both at inconvenient times.

Ahh yeah, that is a long way to travel each day. If you're happy with your brother looking after him then I'm sure he will adjust.

I got my two from a rescue, they are mother and son. Tess had been in the rescue for a month when her kittens were born and when her kittens were 12 weeks old and ready to go home Tess and Pix came home to me. Tess had had 3 homes previously and has adjusted well here, she thinks she's the ruler of everyone but is very happy. So although upheaval isn't what is best for them, they adjust well.

He's been with me for over a year though - do you think he'll still adjust? Or do you think I should try to sneak him into student accommodation? On a side note, applying for student finance is a nightmare!

Eurgh Student Finance They couldn't find my course code anywhere and I didn't end up getting anything until 6 months after my start date.

Tbh I wouldn't risk taking him into student accommodation, but that's just me. I'm sure he'll adjust.
