Insurance

Hey!

I am wanting to take out insurance for my cat. He's a year old Maine Coon. He is an indoor cat but is curious about the outside world and tries to sneak out (doesn't get very far into the back garden tho).

Now, I am wanting to take out insurance for him because you never know what will happen. I don't know who to use though. I don't want a ridiculously expensive one either. Was looking into Pets@Home because they have a voucher incentive at the moment.

Who do you use for insurance?
Who would you recommend?

Thanks

I'd caution anyone against using comparison websites if they are planning on taking out a mortgage or other loan in the near future. When you use them you input all your details which are passed onto numerous companies - who then on the assumption you will be paying monthly each run a credit check on you. These searches can move your credit rating from 'excellent' to 'poor' in the blink of an eye because they give the impression you are asking for credit from numerous places.

Sorry to take this thread off topic but I am worried that other members may be worried about their credit rating after reading your post so I would be interested in seeing the reports that say the use of all Comparison Sites can have a detrimental effect on your Credit Rating.

As far as I am aware it is making multiple applications for loans through comparison sites and being declined over a short period that can effect your credit rating.

I would have thought that shopping around for pet/car/house insurance etc through comparison sites would have no effect on your credit rating whatsoever. Checking the credit rating of every person using comparison sites would be an expensive and unjustifiable exercise when you consider how many people use them and that a customer may have checked many insurance companies before settling on a final insurance provider.

Re: Insurance

we use petplan for Alfie, he's an indoor cat but you just never know what may happen to them so we'd rather be safe knowing we have the insurance there as a back up to cover the cost of any care he may need.

Re: Insurance

I've just started looking into this too. Petplan seems good but you can get pretty much the same coverage at a cheaper price from Animal Friends and I think that I may be going with them.

Re: Insurance

My vet said she's not allowed to recommend specific companies, BUT (lol) Petplan is generally considered quite a good one, so have a look at what their policy covers and then shop around to see who is offering similar and see if you can save money that way. I ended up going with Petplan though!

It shouldn't. There are two types of searches and the companies should use the one which simply checks who you are - only you can see these and they wouldn't show up to a lender or have any adverse effect. Unfortunately a growing number of people are reporting that the credit rating agencies are allowing companies (especially insurance companies) to record searches which do show up to lenders and can affect your ability to obtain credit. It's wrong, it shouldn't happen - but it is doing. If you must use comparison sites (and most of us must) then just make sure you have a clear 30 days between doing so and applying for any major loan. Mind you, you could not bother to wait and risk being refused, the going rate from Experian for allowing such a search to be wrongly recorded and it adversly affecting you seems to be £1000 at present.
