Re: Insurance

You need to shop around to see what suits. The only advice I would give is to be careful to read the small print. Some insurance policies look good because they are cheap, but one of the main pitfalls of some cheap insurance policies is that your pet is insured for an illness only on a 12 month basis as opposed to a lifetime policy.

What this means, in effect, is if your pet develops a condition which will require treatment for the rest of its life, for example, colitis, diabetes, ashthma then some policies will insure your pet when the condition is first diagnosed and they will continue to pay out till the end of the twelve month period. Once the policy comes up for renewal, they will no longer insure your pet for that condition and they add it as an exclusion to the policy.

Other policies, which offer insurance throughout the life of the pet, continue to pay out year after year for that condition, never adding it as an exclusion at the end of the twelve month term. These insurance policies are generally more expensive but the best in my opinion.

Slightly off topic - comparison sites and credit checks.

As far as I am aware it is making multiple applications for loans through comparison sites and being declined over a short period that can effect your credit rating.

I would have thought that shopping around for pet/car/house insurance etc through comparison sites would have no effect on your credit rating whatsoever. Checking the credit rating of every person using comparison sites would be an expensive and unjustifiable exercise when you consider how many people use them and that a customer may have checked many insurance companies before settling on a final insurance provider.

It's wrong, it shouldn't happen - but it is doing. If you must use comparison sites (and most of us must) then just make sure you have a clear 30 days between doing so and applying for any major loan. Mind you, you could not bother to wait and risk being refused, the going rate from Experian for allowing such a search to be wrongly recorded and it adversly affecting you seems to be £1000 at present.
Hey ho - be assured that these worries are groundless. (I can guarantee it on my website )

Credit checks are taken when you apply for a loan. If you are asking for a quote - which is what happens on comparison sites - then there's no need to run a credit check. Even so, most insurance companies wouldn't bother because if you fail to pay your monthly premium they'll simply cancel your insurance.

Such checks can only be made by the company you are applying to - they cost money to undertake and there's no point in a comparison site undertaking them.

However, where comparison sites gather your details and pass them on for quotes they have a limited number of companies that they can transmit them to, so you won't get a decent picture of what's available, i.e. they leave out a number of companies that might suit you better. On my site I let you see what the offerings are - and then let people ask for individual quotes.

Re: Insurance

Watch out for vets who only use one insurance company for claims, happened to a friend recently, she had to have emergency surgery on her dog and it turned out the vets only worked with one company and said she would have to pay the bill in full then reclaim it herself! OUCH!

So worth checking with your vet first just incase (I did see someone's post on this thread about the vet not recommending any particular company which is good but obviously this practice had other ideas).

Vets are not allowed, by law, to recommend only one company. They may, however, act as an agent for one (usually Pet Plan).

This is usual and how most pet insurance works because some companies are reluctant to pay out, so the vets want their money for the service they have provided and it's up to you to make the claim.

Now, I am wanting to take out insurance for him because you never know what will happen. I don't know who to use though. I don't want a ridiculously expensive one either. Was looking into Pets@Home because they have a voucher incentive at the moment.

Who do you use for insurance?
Who would you recommend?

Thanks
We use pet plan

On a note about the voucher, double check unless i read tv ad wrong its only dog ins that you get voucher with, please correct me if i did read it wrong x

Re: Insurance

I used Healthy Pets last year and More Than this year. Didn't have any claims last year but they seemed ok, have had a few claims so far this year (think we are coming up to the 4th ) and More Than have so far been excellent - I've received the money quickly and in whoever's name I've requested it, and you have 24 hour access to a free advice line staffed by vet nurses
