Staying outside

I let Shadow out yesterday for only the second time and all the time he was out i knew where he was in neighbours gardens. He came home after 3 hours and had a sleep on my lap. As everything went okay yesterday I let him out at 9.30 this morning and in most part I knew where he was with Puss Puss and they kept coming back to my garden like checking in which was fine. It is now 5.30pm and he has now wandered of out of sight for the last hour. For some of you may think whats the problem as it is not late and probable if it was not my cat I would be saying the same. Why cant he turn up like Puss Puss does for his meals. She has just been feed and is now laying down on my lawn and still no sign of Shadow. At least he has not eaten since 6.15 this morning. I think he is probale tired himself out and is sleeping in a bush somewhere. This is going to be a long evening.

Re: Staying outside

I haven't let mine out yet so don't have experience but maybe because it's all so new to him out there he's less likely to check in than your other cat until things settle down for him and going outside becomes a normal experience for him?

Re: Staying outside

It's always a worry when cats are allowed outside. I hope Shadow decides it's time to come home soon

Re: Staying outside

Glad he's decided to stroll in for his dinner If you are happy letting your cats out I see no reason to keep him in - just get him home before dark and try to teach him to come when called or to the sound of biscuits or treats rattling in a box. I wouldn't let him out in the evening or if you are not around during the day.

What I thought was my elderly father lives with me and as I go out to work and I am home by just after 4.30pm I could get my father to let him out around 1pm giving him 4 hours out if he should return by 5.00pm. How does that sound?

Re: Staying outside

Fine but I would say that if Shadow wants to get in sooner would your Father be able to let him back in? Otherwise could you leave a window open or put in a catflap?

Re: Staying outside

for the first few weeks you should be supervising him outside in short bursts building up from 2mins to 15mins, and teaching him recall.

then and only then I start to let my cats go outside with the door then open, then build up to shutting it, always worked for me and they come in on recall, I dont think id ever have seen them again if I just openned the door and let them out
