Am going to get in to trouble one day!

I was in P@H this evening, where a man was whizzing about the store grabbing loads of stuff for a kitten he had just got.

He shouted over to one of the staff asking what was the cheapest wet kitten food and dry food, because he'd been told that if you start kittens off on expensive stuff you'll never get them on to the cheap stuff

I decided to shove my two penneth in and told him it was utter nonsense and that I didn't think it was a good idea to feed a kitten on dry food, and what would he do if the kitten refused to eat the food.

He looked at me like I was a martian, and then said that the kitten wouldn't get anything else so it would have to eat it

Some people just don't get it. There are probably alot of people like that. He wants to save money but he neglects what actually good for the kitty. It makes u think...why get a kitten if you don't take the time to understand them?

Lol.. Good on you!

My OH came home from work the other night after shoving the cat food bible down some colleagues throat about her feeding her cat Whiskas purely because of what I've told him I've learnt from these forums.. Apparently he apologised afterwards because he suddenly realised he'd sounded like a complete ar$ehole, when he's normally a rather kind soul. I'm obviously getting to him...

I am not known for my tact or diplomacy, and if something needs saying it's normally me saying it!

In fact most people say that if you don't want a straight answer don't ask me

Re: Am going to get in to trouble one day!

I come from a similar school of thought as the gentleman in p@h that if they're hungry enough they'll eat what i give them....

that's what I think!!!!!

......back in the real world when we go shopping we buy the cat food last as it's always discussion like this 'what are they eating at the moment? I don't think they like the jelly stuff, I think they prefer flakes, don't get the dark meat ones, well they like fish, steamed or normal?'. We take it home to two excited cats tell them we've spent a long time choosing this so it's something you like, put the food in the dish then......watch them walk off!

We've got odd packets of everything in our cupboard that they've decided they don't like anymopre.

Re: Am going to get in to trouble one day!

I always have mixed emotions when I go to P@H now, there's always some idiot doing something ridiculous with/to/for their animals, and I have to completely avoid the bit at the back where they have the animals for adoption

A while ago when I went in there a woman was walking around carrying the tiniest of kittens and now I've actually seen a 6 week old kitten it must have been younger than that because she was smaller

Seriously what a muppet!!!! dont take on a pet if you aren't going to give a high quality diet and veterinary care.

Good for you! Not that he'll listen of course...

P@H is a classic place for finding numpties, unfortunately. I have a hamster and so am often hanging around the hamster section in there, looking at their little faces behind the glass... and there's usually someone in there with a toddler letting the toddler choose a new pet hamster.

It's often all I can do not to tell them that hamsters are NOT suitable pets for toddlers as they are nocturnal so the child will never actually see the animal, they're timid so not really easy for toddlers to handle, and it's likely you'll be bored in a few weeks' time... but I always bite my tongue.

I don't think I could work in a place like that. I'd probably get fired after a couple of days.

Re: Am going to get in to trouble one day!

Whilst I 'Like' your post, I also 'dislike' it too.

I have no issue with what anyone wants to feed their cat/kitten, but I do think that if you choose to be responsible for another being; human or pet, you should treat it with respect and try and learn what is best for it. The fact that the man thought you were mad in what you were saying is very sad. If he listened and didn't act, that is his choice, and at least you could have felt he may choose better next time.

A lot of people wonder why any pet is given so much attention and why people go out of their way to learn to do the best by them. My MIL thought I was mad when I was doing all I could to get things right for my fish. She went on about' in her day' they got fish from the funfair and took them on the rides and spun them round. She thought this was hilarious.

You only have to watch that RSPCA show in the mornings (watched when I was off sick, it may not be on any more) to feel disgusted that a so called nation of animal lovers could behave in such an appalling way. The thing is that a lot of the time the people are not trying to be mean. They are treating the animal with the same respect their parents showed them.

Bonnie, what upsets me about P@H (or any pet shop) is when parents do nothing about kids tapping on the glass of hamsters, fish etc. These animals get distressed about all this constant noise, especially nocturnal animals trying to sleep or fish which are sensitive to vibrations. Why can't they just educate them and say 'Look, but don't touch'. It annoys the hell out of me as I know the fish will most likely get 'White Spot' as soon as they get home as they are too stressed and owners will not bother to treat them so the poor fish just dies and gets replaced on the next shopping trip.
