chosen my kittens - advise please

Hi
So I have chosen my 2 kittens. Both boys from seperate litters, both coming home with me on the same night. I would like to know what age they need their first injections etc. Will these 2 be okay together on their first night without fighting? Or should I have them sleep in my room with me to keep an eye on them for the first few nights

Re: chosen my kittens - advise please

How old are they? If they are the recommended 12 weeks they should have had both injections already.

If they are from a rescue centre then they usually have the first set of injections at 8-9 weeks, and you do the 2nd set 3 weeks later. This is usually already paid for and included in the cost of donation.

After that, it will just be an annual booster.

In regards to fighting, cats play fight anyway even when they are best buddies. You can keep an eye on them, but on their first night I would restrict access to one room and keep everything in that room; food, water, litter tray, bed, scratch post etc so they feel safe and secure and have a place to go back to when it all gets too much.. As to whether they get on, it totally depends on the personality of the kittens. Being new together in anew home might help them to assist each other, but it isn't always that way.

Have they met each other already? Where are you getting them from?

Re: chosen my kittens - advise please

First vaccinations are done at 9 weeks. They will get on fine, kittens always do. The only caution I would give is this: taking two unvaccinated kittens from two different households and mixing them before they are vaccinated means that if one is incubating something nasty, the other is almost certain to get it as well thus doubling your vet bills. I found this out the hard way!

Re: chosen my kittens - advise please

I intend on getting them to the vets for checks etc after the weekend they arrive with me.
I found them on the pre-loved website, they haven't met each other yet. They both seem quite playful, maybe the first one I chose is a little timid but I think they should be fine. The second one loved me cuddling him and kept playing with my hair and licking my hands which I thought was so sweet. He also wouldnt let go and clung on to me when I tried to put him down, I thought this was a good sign he wanted me as his new mummy
I'm taking the day off work to spend with them and then I have them all weekend to help them settle in.
Shall call the vets now and get them booked in for that week

How old are they going to be when you get them? As Lizward says its not very wise to bring in two unvaccinated kittens together.

Re: chosen my kittens - advise please

It is worth having a check up even if they have had both vaccinations as you can meet your chosen vet and discuss any concerns you have. A lot of practices have advice on grooming, and what to watch out for and some do free kitten checks. You should be able to book the appointment now so it is all sorted for when you bring the kittens home.

I take it the kittens have not been health tested yet by their current owners - have you asked them if they have been flea treated/wormed at least? If there has been no health check up then I strongly suggest you follow the advice of the other posters and keep them apart until you know they are both OK. This means bringing them home in separate carriers too.

It is just not worth the heartache in case one is ill and passes something on to the other. Have you been told how old the kittens are/their birthday?

Re: chosen my kittens - advise please

the first is 12 weeks and the second is 10 weeks (when they come home) - they have been fleed and wormed up to date. They havent had any innoculations - now im a little worried I will ring the vets and get the first kitten booked in the morning after I get him and then collect the other kitten later on or on the Monday. I dont want to get them in the house and then straight out for injections and cause any stress. Poor little mites. I have seen both parents of both litters, everything seems okay but better to be safe than sorry!

Re: chosen my kittens - advise please

How irresponsible of the current owners not to get them vaccinated if they are going to be 12 & 10 weeks old. [In other words; how cheap!]

Kittens should be vaccinated at 8-9 weeks and then 11-12 weeks.

I think your plan sounds good and try not to worry, I am sure they will be fine. It is just much better to err on the side of caution. At least if you get them health checked yourself it will reassure you too.

When do you collect the first kitten?
