Outside or inside?

I posted a thread a while back asking who has indoor cats and who has outdoor cats. There was a clear majority at that time for allowing cats outside.

This afternoon I arrived at a clients house who was utterly distraught since her 11 year old cat and ventured outside and not returned after 48 hours. The cat rarely went outside.

I have two cats and a Bull Terrier next door, who has already killed the pub cat from down the road. One of my little cats is not the brightest button in the box, and I really do not want to chance letting either of them out.

Am I wrong to keep my girls inside, or should I allow them out?

Re: Outside or inside?

You are the only one who can weigh the risks and make that decision.
Mine are indoor if that helps in any way, I have had my share of tragedies in the distant past and do not intend to have any more. If you can afford to cat proof your garden that is the perfect [imo ] compromise. Cats are territorial, most do not have an urge to wander as more physically dominant cats will attack them to defend their territory. A cat proofed garden would be a little bit of heaven, freedom to sample the elements , but protected from dogs, cars and aggressive feline politics.

Re: Outside or inside?

mine are outside cats but don't wonder too far, i voted for letting them out without seeing the cat proof garden bit so i would say let them have the garden

Re: Outside or inside?

No, you're not wrong to want to keep them inside. All mine are kept indoors, or they have pens in the back yard. Everyone who has cats has to decide what is best for their cats. I chose for mine to be inside as thats the safest for my cats

Re: Outside or inside?

If no guaranteed safe outdoor area, then I would vote indoor. Mine have a covered run and the rest of the garden enclosed with Purrfect fencing. Harry has tested the perimeter fence - on several occasions - and has pronounced it well and truely escape proof For added security for the cats as well as the house I have a security camera out back too. I just don't trust other people around, even though the cats are safe. I have found cooked meat bones in my garden on several occasions, which unless they have been dropped by a passing vulture can only have been thrown in there. Luckily my cats are far too well fed to bother with them.

Re: Outside or inside?

These posts have been so refreshing. I thought I may get slated for keeping my girls inside.

I have taken a look at some of these cat proof fences, but love the design of one of my client's (clients ideas are good research ). She has brought some green fencing on a roll from B & Q, bent it over so it faces inside and placed it on top of her existing fence. Its pretty cheap too.

She has rag doll cats by the way

Re: Outside or inside?

I voted let them go outside. Mine have free access to come and go as they please during the day. But i get them in at 10pm and lock the catflap to ensure they are safe while we are sleeping.

Re: Outside or inside?

this topic has been covered dozens of times im sure and each time you will always get some that let their cats out and some that dont, i keep ragdoll cats and are not let to wander if mine go into the garden they have their own cat house and run to play in but the choice is finally yours. personally i think its so much safer to keep them indoors , theres too many dangers out there, traffic, dogs, PEOPLE, foxes. the list is endless,
