Do you all trim your cats claws?

My kittens are very good about using their scratching posts, so would I need to trim their claws too, or are they doing this themselves by using the posts?

Re: Do you all trim your cats claws?

I find Tiga's thumb claws need trimming now and again as they tend to curl round but other than that they seem fine

I *think* scratch posts mostly sharpen their claws But yes I trim all three girls weekly. You know they are too long if they start getting caught on soft furnishings, or draw blood on our delicate human flesh without too much effort.

Re: Do you all trim your cats claws?

I never thought about trimming cat claws until I saw my girls breeder doing it on a visit one day. I now do hers whenever they get too sharp as she's a house cat anyway and it saves the furnature even though she has a scratch post.

I started doing it on my parents 8 year old too, even the vets clipped his last time he had a visit there.

Most important thing if you're clipping them...

Do not clip the quick of the nail. This is the pink part at the base of the nail and will be very painful and bleed if clipped.

Best time to do it is when the cat is relaxed or sleepy. And dont struggle. If your cat has had enough, take a break, and go back later.

Molly's had her's done 3 times, she's now nearly 9 months. First time at the vet when she was spayed, she now goes to a groomer who does them for me.

Re: Do you all trim your cats claws?

I know people who do this when their cat is elderly or ill, but wonder how many do it with kittens, if the kittens are actually using scratch posts and not furniture/humans.

Their claws don't seems especially sharp and when they pat me with their claws retracted I can't feel anything.

They are being neutered this week so I thought I would ask and see how many do it/whether it is necessary, and then get the Vet to show me how to do it properly/carefully on Friday.

I have mastered the knack of brushing their teeth and grooming them, so one more bit of pampering shouldn't be too much harder. They absolutely love all this indulgence, and it all certainly gets their purring motors going

My kitten is 4 1/2 months old and I clip her claws whenever I feel they are getting slightly too sharp. She uses the scratch post but does occasionaly become naughty and go for furnature or even worse... skin!

If I dont do hers, they are most definately... too sharp!

Re: Do you all trim your cats claws?

I trim Maisies, she's five months and I've done them twice so far, doesn't last long as she sharpens them back up pretty quickly
I wait untill she's snuggled on my knee, get my nail clippers and snip snip snip stops her ripping the leather sofa when she's having a mad dash and she doesn't get them stuck in the upstairs carpets so much.
