Why do cats hate water?

I dunno if this has been discussed before.

I know some cats (like turkish van if thats the right one lol) like water, the odd cat that doesn't mind dippin in the water. But is there any particular knowen reason why they hate water??

I'm only asking this because my O/H forgot to take the plug out the bath yesterday and left the door open. Next thing we knew Kira has jumped in and was splashing around freaking out (water wasn't hot or anything), drenched the whole bathroom and living room

Re: Why do cats hate water?

IVe never seen a cat that actually really hates water.

I think its down to the personal cat not really the breed, as they say bengals love and swim and play in water, only two of my kittens have ever shown any interest in it, my moggie plays with it more out of all of them and the raggies get in the shower with me!

Hahaha thats sweet. Kiras always wants to sit on the bath next to me, on the ledge, i had to stop her when I was trying to read a book and she kept splashing water about with her paw lol

So its just every cats personal preference

Re: Why do cats hate water?

Mine are fascinated with running water, so if a tap is left running, or they can hear you having a wee, they get VERY excited

They also LOVE being in the same room when I have a bath or shower, maybe they like the steam or the warmth? Gloworm did fall in a shallow bath once, he wasnt best pleased though.

Re: Why do cats hate water?

my ginger tom, tango, loved a running tap. The kitchen sink didnt have traditional twisty taps, it was a mixer tap with a lever kinda mechanism... he soon worked out how to use the lever to turn the tap on for his own amusement

Re: Why do cats hate water?

I regularly have an audience when I'm having a bath now (no privacy any more!)............and Ingrid plays with the bubbles with her paw.Harry waits for me outside the shower too-I can see his little black cat shape waiting for me through the shower door.

Re: Why do cats hate water?

My two Bengal kittens love water. They 'dig' in it frantically like a mole in mud, and have jumped in their large water bowl - all four feet at a time - quite happily. I put down a washing up bowl with an inch of water in it on the bathroom floor and they both climbed in simultaneously and had a whale of a time. In fact, they'll do anything with water except drink it! I decided to put out a bowl of ice cubes today as it has been so hot and that went over very well - they've been picking them out of the bowl and patting them about the floor, then licking their wet feet.

In contrast, I gave my ginger tom a - very traumatic (for both of us) - bath once nine years ago, and he refuses to go into the bathroom now even if the door's open, all this time later! I guess he must be part elephant...
