cat tip re drinking water

a friend of mine gave me this tip the other day so i thought i'd share it here, since i know how difficult it can be to get cats to drink plenty of water in the summer months -

The temptation is to put the cats water bowl with his food bowl(s), more than likely in the kitchen, at least it always has been for me... but cats dont think "mmm that was tasty, i'll just wash it down with a quick drink".
Eating and drinking are seperate parts of a cats life.
My friend advises that you put the water bowl somewhere different, like in their 'comfy area'. I've moved my cats water dish not far from his scratchpost and play area and he's already been drinking out of it a lot more than he did when it was in the kitchen.
I dunno if its a well documented tip or not, but it makes sense and it works.

Interesting, may have to try this out.
Me thinks I'll have stood in the bowl before the days out.

Re: cat tip re drinking water

I have water bowls scattered everywhere in various states as well. Sometimes they love clean fresh water but sometimes they prefer drinking the skanky water that has been down for days.

Or water from a source outside!

One of mine used to wait while I watered the pot plants in the garden and drink from the drip trays! I was concerned about her 'increased' drinking and thought she might have kidney problems but thankfully my fears were unfounded!

I'm with you on this one, Scamps the same but he does have his favourite bowl outside by the house so I can top it up regularly, other ones are scattered inside and out

Re: cat tip re drinking water

Mine drink quite a lot, between the two of them they easily drink 3/4 a litre a day at the moment probably because it's boiling hot in my house, before they were drinking less than that. And Bobs has wet food still so gets moisture from that as well.

Mine were the same not in the least interested in water when it was by their food bowls.

They are currently getting fed in the hall (it's cooler than the kitchen so the food is staying fresher longer) and they have one bowl in the hall, 2 in the bathroom (which I do retrieve before visitors come round because it is a bit random they tend to drink out of the bathroom one most) , 1 in the utility room and 1 in the kitchen.

Re: cat tip re drinking water

alot of people put water away from food as they like that so im told??

If its summer and you are worried you can mix some water in with their wet meat, the meat soaks up the water and creates a nice gravy, mine love it
