As for the bits & bobs people are always getting rid of fish bowls cheap, small ones don't cost much anyhow, your probably looking at £30 (small bowl, gravel, food & fish)....and the waters free
I would love more goldfish! We had marine fish..WOW now that is a lot of work, plus you even have to pay for the water Gorgeous to watch but a full-time job!

Fish shuld never be kept in bowls.

Goldfish need a least 55 gallons. Most bowls sold are ten. Goldfish do not 'only grow to the size of their tank' their organs continue to grow and thats why they die. Well kept goldfish can live for up to 20 years, possibly more.

Do you keep track of the ammonia, nitrate and nitrites? As thats part of fishkeeping also.

Its not a case of sticking them in a tiny bowl and cleaning them out. They should never get a full tank of clean water.

Re: Best pet besides cat or dog?

Firstly, I agree with the others that have said please think carefully - don't get any pet unless you can be sure you have the time, space, money, and dedication to care for it properly - whatever its needs.

That said... have you considered a tarantula? Shouldn't be handled, feed about once a week, remove uneaten food, clean out yearly.... They only need a small viv / tank with a heat mat (no light needed).

I was looking into getting one myself not long ago so did a fair amount of research (unfortunately it's no longer an option for the time being). Jamie - usually found in the spider and invert section - can give you the best advice on spiders.

Re: Best pet besides cat or dog?

I think the bird project is a good idea, so you can feed them while they still have their freedom and who knows, you might even find a runaway parrot that you can teach to say your name when he is hungry
