Fostering

My friend is interesting in fostering pregnant cats, she lives in a 4 bedroom house, has one child age 3, and no other animals, anyone know the best way of her to start? She has been thinking about it for a while and has even set up for it (brought crates, litter trays etc)

Re: Fostering

Does she have any experience with pregnant cats, handrearing and looking after kittens? That would be the main issue...
Can she recognise when a cat is in difficulty, when it has another kitten to pass but hasnt been able to?

Does she have the money to pay for c sections and months of time to devote solely to the kittens? I imagine it woud be hard with a 3 yr old.

Re: Fostering

I've fostered new mums with kittens (as young as 2 days) before but never a pregnant animal as I honestly would have no clue if a mum was in difficulty or not and its simply not something I know enough about to take on, when there are experts who can do it.

Re: Fostering

Yes she has had a lot of experience with pregnant cats as her parents used to own a farm and they had to cope with pregnant ferals alot, she is 30 years old and I'm not sure on her finances but I don't think she would be considering it, if she felt she couldn't afford it x

Re: Fostering

I imagine the best way to start then would be to start devoting time to working at a cat rescue, fostering non pregnant cats for a start and working alongside an existing rescue, who I would imagine home check then give her any pregnant cats if they felt she was suitable and she was available.

Re: Fostering

I would tell her to contact the local rescue centres etc and register her interest.

I don't know, I'm just trying to get advise on what she told me she wants to do, hopefully I can show her the thread and leave the decision up to her then. x

Re: Fostering

I don't think it's difficult to get accepted to foster cats. Our two both came from the same fosterer, who works with the RSPCA..... she lives in a very modest terraced council house, with a couple of kids and a couple of cats of her own. I believe she's had about ten cats/kittens cycled though in the three months since we first met her, but never more than four at a time. She has her front room set up as Cat Central, where she can isolate her foster cats if necessary..... and it usually IS necessary, 'cos her own cats tend to get quite

The difficult bit must be letting them go, when the time comes, but presumably by the time you've had a couple of dozen through the doors you get used to that side of things.
