Which breed of kitten?

Hi,
I am starting to look for a kitten as a friend for my 2 year old female cat, and wondered if somebody would be able to give me some advice on suitable breeds.
We live on a main road so our cat is a house cat and the new kitten would be too (we do have a run in the garden so they get fresh air).
Our current cat is a short haired moggy and is quite a shy nervous cat but also very affectionate when she wants to be.
The reason we are looking to get another cat is because we are out at work all day and want our current cat to have a friend to play with.

So, what kind of short or medium haired breeds are likely to be suitable to live with another shy cat as an indoor cat, that will be happy with us being out for quite a lot of the day, and that has a good easy going temperament?

Also does it make a difference whether we get a male or a female, which one is best likely to settle with our cat?

Thank you!

Re: Which breed of kitten?

I would go for a laidback breed, a british shorthair maybe?

Re: Which breed of kitten?

Obviously a lot depends on an individual cats personality but I have found female cats in general to be more territorial and highly strung especially with other females about so I would perhaps edge towards getting a male. Have you considered a rescue cat? If you have a friendly rescue local to you they may be able to help you find a cat that has the personality you are looking for, a lively playful little kitten may stress out your already shy and nervous cat.

Kizzi our cat is three next month and I too am thinking of another one, and have been told to choose a male kitten, by quite a few people now, including keepers at our local cats and dogs home.

Re: Which breed of kitten?

p,s, is there any chance of the older female -my Kizzi or the posters female cat, 'mothering' the kitten or will they be jealous and observe and perhaps bully the kitten?
By mothering i mean 'look out for' or protect' not suckle obviously!
