Cat fur

Hiya all

Im not new to the forum but im more of a lurker as the info you can get on here is invaluable. Anyhow ive got a semi long haired gorgeous kitty but he sheds something chronic. Has anyone got any tips or useful things that help to keep it under some kind of control? Lint removers are our best friend lol, they are a godsend to get the fur off clothes and the sofa etc. Just wondering what people do to combat the fur probs x

Re: Cat fur

Have you had a look at Furminators? They are excellent for getting most of the loose fur off our lovely kitties. But if you show your kitty I would probably not use one. They do seem to strip the coat of natural oils (to me anyway) but only temporarily.

Re: Cat fur

Hi Aurelia

No i dont show him or anything..ill have a look at the furminator cos that sounds like just the ticket. He adores being brushed and it doesnt matter how often i brush him, tons of fur come off each time. Can you overgroom a cat? not sure how often you should brush him, its normally 2-3 times a week.

Re: Cat fur

Well you can buy a Furminator on Ebay for less than £10 I think I would advise only using it perhaps once a month or less if you can though. I think there is potential to over groom with them there.

But if used correctly in one go you probably wont need to use it again for a while anyway

Re: Cat fur

Furminators are great in moderation. We have a shorted haired tabby who has very thick fur and a tendency to develop dandruff. A quick going over with a furminator now and again thins it out a bit and the dandruff goes.

I would use it outside though if possible it gets EVERYWHERE! You'll be amazed how much can come out.

Re: Cat fur

Hey former lurker, while the furminator is a good tool for the occasional going-over do check that you can use it on your breed of cat. For example, while I can use it on my BSH it is not recommended for use on Turkish Vans. Or used to....

PS: I can recommend the kitty groom or whatever that purple cat shaped rubbed thingyme is called

Re: Cat fur

I sometimes just sit mine in the empty bath tub and 'groom' with my hands/nails for 10 mins or so. The fur just flies! And i guess if they ever needed a bath one day they will have positive associations

Furminator is great but be prepared - the amount of hair is terrifying

The rubber brush - zoom groom... I stopped using it as i think (and may be wrong!) that it also takes off the top layer not just the under coat. I can tell by the colour (my dark girl has a bright white under coat ) and i blame it for my boys stripes going missing when i got a bit overzealous! (his shoulders had almost no top coat bad bad slave! )

I use a slicker brush (after reqs from the forum) they both LOVE it and i use it every day but for a very quick once over
