Unhappy Urgent advice reqd please

Hello,

We have a beautiful burmese kitten who is 15 weeks old. She is just adorable, we love her and the kids love her dearly.

BUT

We want to keep her as an indoor cat, but the problem is where to keep her and her loo.

At the moment we put her in the hall with the door open to the downstairs bathroom when we go out and at bedtime. her toys and toilet are also in the very small space. It isn't practical to keep her there as we aren't able to use the front door or downstairs loo ourselves, the smell from the poo isn't nice either.

We have no other rooms apart from the garage where we could put her.

Our problem is, and we really should have thought about it, when winter comes, the hall and bathroom are unheated and it gets FREEZING cold in there and also the garage is as cold as outside, so in winter temperatures it wouldn't be good for her and we wouldn't feel comfortable with that.

It's now at the stage that we are thinking of phoning the breeder but that's a hearbreaking thought.

I would really appreciate your advice and thoughts of how to get around this.

Thank you

Kitty

Re: Urgent advice reqd please

Firstly welcome to the forum. Now down to what you seem to feel is a problem. Why do you need to confine her to the hall and bathroom .at 15 weeks she needs to be able to explore her surroundings.By all means to keep her safe from any dangerous situations she needs to be protected but surely your rooms are not all potentially dangerous All you need to do is to protect any wires by using cable tidies or unplugging .Make sure there are no gaps where she can become trapped ,and of course keep windows closed. It will not be possible nor fair to keep her confined like this, she needs to develop mentally and physically.Indoor cats need to have space and stimulation or you could have behaviour problems.

Why do you want to keep the kitty indoor? Maybe you can clean out the laundry and put a bed in there as well as a litter tray. One of my kitties is mostly indoor but roams outside for an hour or two a day.

Cats love to explore and keeping her to the Hall and the downstairs bathroom is not very fair on her.
We have 3 cats and they have access to the whole house.
Providing you have scratching posts in a few of the rooms and Toys and sleeping areas with soft beds your home will be fine.

If you keep the cat tray maybe in the downstairs bathroom and take out any little deposits as soon as you can then that should be fine too.

Also you could cat proof your garden or even install a cat run so she can get some fresh air.

We have now cat proofed our garden and on nice days like today they are in there all Day.

Re: Urgent advice reqd please

Hello and welcome to the forum

I live in a two bedroom flat and the only place Molly is banned from when we aren't here is the bathrooms. This has been the case since the day she moved in During the day, when we are at work, she has all her toys on the living room floor, and she has two double beds to use if she wants a sleep.

I have her litter tray not far from the front door (have tried to move it, but she wont have any of it!!) The smell isn't at all noticable, even if she's had a poo while we have been out.

I can honestly say we have never had any problems in regards to her having this freedom.

Thanks for your replies.

I work from home so virtually apart from school times and bedtime our kitten has full run of all the downstairs of the house, so she isn't confined very much.

The cable clips sound a good idea.

We currently have an enclosed omega litter box. Do you think these are more suitable than an open litter tray?

Re: Urgent advice reqd please

At one stage in my life I had 11 cats in a bedsit (not recommended!) and litter trays everywhere. I'm assuming the problem is the smell of the litter tray? I suggest you look into a booda litter tray, not sure if they still have anything like the old boodabox but that really did do a superb job of controlling both smells and litter scattering.

Tinkerbell, I'm confused. Are you and Kittykitti the same person? You have another thread about rehoming a siamese? What's going on??

Re: Urgent advice reqd please

I have my litter tray in the downstairs loo which is near the front door/off the hall too.Whilst it might smell a bit when they first do a pooh I scoop it out soon as I can and the smell soon disappears.I don't find smell a great problem when I''ve been out at work all day either but if you work from home alot presumably you can scoop out poohs very frequently?.What about putting the tray under the stairs and leaving the door ajar for her? One of my friends has litter trays there.
