I hate my vets

I have been to two vets this month. one to have my cats neutered and one to have their vaccinations (BIG price differences).

The one that runs the PDSA are awfull. Rude and pushy and look down their nose at you as if you are contaminating their breathing space.

The other vets which is an hours walk i love to bits!!! The vet we had was lovely! She was excited to see my cats, was cheerful and happy to explain in detail my cats needs. I REALLY like her. But the vets i like has no pdsa which makes them more expensive.

Wondering what to do. I think if its a small vet bill i will go to the one i like but if its a biggie issue im afriad it will be the pdsa. Its a shame that the people at that vets dont actually like poeple. Or so it appears. Just interested in the money.

Do you like your vets?

Re: I hate my vets

I contacted 3 different vets prior to getting my kittens and went with the one on the basis of a number of factors;

Actually seemed like they cared about my kittens
Most informative about issues I asked about
Recommended by CP
Close to travel to i.e less traumatic for a sick cat
Size of practice i.e. do they know my pets or am I a number?

Also a major factor for me was the Out of Hours service and who provided it, as my second choice had MediVet as their emergency cover. They have a terrible rep for overcharging and doing things that are unneccesary to bump up the cost. A big no-no.

Well yeah the close to travel thing is a big one for me. I can hardily walk my cat an hour there and an hour back if there is something seriously wrong with them.

The actual vet who vaccinated my cats was ok and seemed to like them but the people i had to deal with before i got to see him were awfull. Make the whole experience a bad one for me.

Still prefer the other one though

PDSA, arent you lucky? We arent in the area,so dont get it.

Private vets are nicer,as they are on a nicer salary.

Re: I hate my vets

I've yet to find one I like...
One vet is good with Cutie, he's really calm and patient with him which is great for such a timid cat.
But I feel like as soon as anything's wrong - oh you should come in and we'll need to do this and that and think about a prescription diet and blah blah...
He also looks down at me as if I know nothing, when I've bothered to do the research on a topic that he doesn't get taught at vet school... And he hasn't doesn't the research either.
Same with my other vet, but the other vet has in house emergency service so I'll be using them for that.
I've been to 3 different vets and don't like any of them. Going to try another soon haha.
I get on really well with the receptionist in the one round the corner though so I'm going there later with Dino so she can meet him
I had to get his 2nd vaccination done elsewhere because they don't stock the same brand (his 1st was done at the breeder's vet in Fife)

I hate looking for vets.... But then I'll be one soon so it won't be an issue

Re: I hate my vets

oh lord, I have come across some terrible vets, money grabbing beeeeeps. We got Gemma our cocker spaniel put down, she belonged to my mother in law who is 68 and they charged her over Ģ300 for consultation and PTS which is daylight robbery if you ask me

Our current vets are amazing and couldnt ask for better, very reasonable prices and really big waiting room and consultation rooms which is great for a big dog such as my tilly

Re: I hate my vets

I love the vets we go to now, she treats every animal as if its the only animal she wanted to see all day, shes really knowledgeable and they are average for price. We have some horrors near here though, when the rats had a virus one vet was sending me back home to google what it might be and them having me coming back to tell him what medication I needed, honestly he couldnt have known less about rodents.

Re: I hate my vets

I have to say I really love my vets. It is a small practice but they take their time with Merlin when I take him. Last time I went I took a list of all my worries and we looked at them 1 by one. When I asked him what I owed, he didnīt charge me at all. This is my second visit, the first one, they gave him a complete check-up as I just got him from the shelter, and they only charded me 10 euros for changing his chip. All their clients are very happy with them (I honestly donīt know how they make a living). This year they are going to get a christmas hamper from us

Re: I hate my vets

I took one of my finches to the vet. She was eggbound and only size of a mouse.

She charged my Ģ10 before i even took her out the ruddy box!!!

And she said there was nothing they could do after handling her for 2 mins. And charged a further Ģ6.

So it cost me Ģ16 to have a sprrow sized bird looked at for 2 mins and she didnt even treat her.

Rip off! wouldnt of minded if she actually helped her. Luckily i put her on heat and she laid the egg herself.

That was erm about 18 monthes ago now

Re: I hate my vets

I was not impressed with the original vets I was with earlier this year as they seemed a bit lack lustre when my cat Oscar had a fit. The vet I saw just kept referring to Oscar's age (18). It turns out she was a locum and not a permenant vet at the practice.

I decided to leave, found another one, I done my homework (or thought I had), but am now not really impressed with this one either they didn't seem to want to listen to me as his owner - I mean I know my cat better than anyone! I can't really fault them per say but the vet that originally diagnosed Oscar with CRF made the condition sound worse than what it is.

I've literally just put down the phone from my 1st vets, and after a lovely chat with the practice manager there, I've just re-registered him back there.

The other 2 vets in my area are part of chains, and it shows. If I have concerns in future I will discuss them with the practice manager.

A true lesson in the grass is not always greener
