very shy Bermese

we have been given a very shy Bermese cat, she is hiding in all the nooks and crannies and will not come out, we have had her 24hrs now and she is still hiding, i think she wants to go outside but have been told not to let her for a few days, we dont know her history as she was found in my friends shed where she has lived for the last 8 months until yesterday?

I have 4 children and my house is big but rather busy and noisy

Help?

Dominic

Re: very shy Bermese

Help? She is just scared, new environment, new home, new sounds, new smells, new everything Just leave her be. Keep her litter box nearby and put some food where she can smell it, and water, and just let her get on with it

And I wouldnt let her out for a good while yet. You need to see her health. Is she spayed? Wormed, vaccinated? All of these things need to be done before letting her outside is even considered Microchipped also wouldnt go amiss. if you let her out now shes likely to go straight back to the shed.

Re: very shy Bermese

thanks

i can asume she has been spayed as she has lived outside for the last 8 months and no litter, my friend put food out so she stayed in his garden shed access through open window, don't know anything else about her, the garden shed is 20 miles away so not sure how easy it would be to get back

Never assume Get her checked out by a vet when she goes for vaccinations She could be scanned for a microchip whilst there as well. If she is a pedigree Burmese I would be surprised if she doesnt have a chip, she might just be a moggy which resembles the Burmese breed.

Oh and believe me 20 miles is nothing, she'd certainly wander if let out now. Anyway thats just one of many important reasons not to, regardless

Re: very shy Bermese

best bet is to confine her to one room and slowly intro to the house if shy

if she's a roaming Burmese - has anyone checked her for chip etc? as far as I know it's not one of the roaming breeds

just to point out - Loki's dad was an escaped Burmese found 39 miles from his original home

Re: very shy Bermese

Hi there - it can take much, much longer than this for a cat to settle in a new home, I have a girl who came as an adult and was with me for at least six weeks before she came to me voluntarily and months after that before she jumped up on my knee....the key is patience and letting them cope with things at their own pace.

I have a three year old who is very boisterous and when our girl first came I made the dining room out of bounds for child to give the cat a safe haven to get out of the way if she was feeling stressed.

Im sure there are lots of older threads about introducing a nervous cat and from memory they give excellent advice.

Good luck and believe me the effort will be worth it when this cat starts to respond to you - have had all my cats from kittens except for the nervous girl and believe me when she comes to find me or brings me a toy I truly appreciate it!

Re: very shy Bermese

a few things
1 just because she hasn't had a litter yet doesnt mean she has been spayed
2 How do you know she is Burmese?
3 If she is Burmese there is a good chance someone might be looking for her, you need to get her checked for a microchip. You dont get pedigree Burmese stray cats very often.

A Burmese is a breed of cat (not Bermese )

Roaming is like, roaming. Moving around, going for a wander etc. Burmese tend not to go too far, plus the are pedigree, and expensive, so are unlikely to be a stray.

Do you just think she is a Burmese cos of looks? I would get her scanned for a chip as i would like to think most pedigrees are chipped and she may have an owner looking for her.
