Ziggy caught birds :(

When I say caught I mean she stole 2 fresh hatchlings from a nest. I presume mother bird was off getting food. One was dead when she got here, the other was alive. After a quick check I could only see what I think is a "superficial" wound to the underside of one wing so I figure he may just live to see another day.

He is currently in a nest of facial tissues in my airing cupboard and if he makes it through the night then the wildlife rehabilitation lady will come and get him first thing tomorrow morning.

Keep your fingers crossed for the little mite.

P.S. Can't wait until I move in a month or so and Ziggy can be an indoor only cat, things like this just break my little heart, no matter how natural it is.

Re: Ziggy caught birds :(

Thanks Emma-Jayne.

I checked on him at 3:30am and again when I got up at 6am and he's made it. In fact he doesn't seem any different to yesterday so perhaps it is just a "superficial" wound like I suspected.

Regardless of that he is just a hatchling and is definitely not capable of caring for himself and I can't be here to feed him every 20 minutes during the day so at 8am the wildlife rehabilitator lady will come and get him.

He was a nice house guest I hope to get good news in the near future from the rescue.

Fingers crossed for the little darling. I guess I'm lucky in 3 years of going out the only thing Moriarty has caught was a tiny spider. He's just rubbish at hunting thank god. I'd freak out if he brought animals home. Tabitha on the other hand has been out on a harness and lead 3 times and has 4 kills already She loves worms, yuck!

Is Ziggy feeling remorse or is he wondering how to get a hold of it

Keep us updated

Re: Ziggy caught birds :(

It's natural instinct so she's been sulking today and giving me evil glares as if to say "Why did you take my new toys away? They were interactive!"

Unfortunately the rescue people couldn't get anyone out to me this morning to pick up the bird so I told them that he seemed healthy enough (he seemed better this morning than last night) so I would feed him today and drop him off at 6 this afternoon.

45 minutes between feeds, each feed was a small amount of cat biscuits soaked in water and mushed up (best I could do without having to leave him for an extended period of time to get bird nutrient feed stuff). Feeds went fine until a few hours ago when he stopped gaping for me and I had to force feed. The next feed he wouldn't swallow and I was starting to see the signs of septicemia. The next feed he had deteriorated rapidly and I couldn't even get his mouth open enough to try. I could hear the rattling and he was very limp so I knew there wouldn't be a next feed.

I tried to make his last few minutes as comfortable as possible. Nuked the rice sock (sock filled with rice and microwaved for a minute or two to keep him warm), got him all snuggly cosy and left him to sleep in the warmth. Poor mite never woke up.

I had a cry but I know I did the best that I could possibly do, without antibiotics there was no chance and vets won't treat. I had hoped he would hang on until 6 when I could get him to the rescue place and the girl there would have finished work at the vets, she could've given him antibiotics but honestly, it was probably too late.

I know I did more than most people would and I take comfort knowing I did all I could.

Oh no, poor little mite. Sleep well and fly onto the bridge.

You really did everything you could. Not many people would have done so much. You have a kind soul and a generous spirit. I hope Ziggy doesn't sulk for too long

Thank you.

I think she's more annoyed about having to wear her collar again than anything else
