Smile Collar or no Collar

Hi, Can you guys give me your opinion on whether to put a collar on my beloved puddy tat!!!
We got her in June last year, but due to new home and being spayed etc., she didnt actually go out until the middle of August, so no birds where caught.
Hoever, this year however, she has found her feet and it out and about. The only trouble is she keeps catching the poor birds and bringing them in for us. Its getting quite stressfull (for us that is) and I am seriously thinking of getting her a collar, but I have heard so many horror stories I am quite worried. We live near a lot of trees and she has recently taken to climbing them so I'm concerned she will do herself an injury or worse. I read about the quick release collars, are they any good. I've also been told they get lost all the time where they do their job and do release when necessary. What do I do!!!

Re: Collar or no Collar

I forgot to say, she has been microchipped, but I was thinking of a bell or something to warn the birds she's on her way.

Re: Collar or no Collar

Bells dont warn birds, they make the cats more stealthy. If you only want a collar to save birds, them I would not get one, as it wont work

The only true way to save any birds would be to keep your cat outside, if she is going out she will catch them, collar and bell or not. One of those things

Re: Collar or no Collar

I dislike all collars, and if anyone has the latest copy of 'your cat' mag, it just backed up what I thought.

No collar even the break ones work all the time, remember that you, a human is testing it to break, if your cat his weight, remember not yours is caught on a branch and hanging by a break open collar, how will it break if they are to small?

they can also get paws caught in them, even mouths

So Im no collar, esp seeing the damage they cause, and after my friends cat died hanging herself

so no collars!

Re: Collar or no Collar

My boy has just been in a fight and his safety collar did what it was designed to do and yes it's another lost collar and three pound down the drain, but I don't mind. Scamp is also microchipped but I like him to have a collar so that people know he is owned. The collar also was marked with the words "I am microchipped" so that he could be traced to us. I know there is a strong debate about collars but Scamp has lost quite a few now so his have worked. It's down to you what you decide of course

Re: Collar or no Collar

No collar... About 20 years ago when I was on holiday one of my cats went missing. My pet sitter and neighbour were looking for her. She was found trapped on a fence, in the garden by people who had returned from holiday that day, back legs just touching the floor preventing strangulation. She was in a horrible state as it was a very ,very hot summer, she had wriggled and wriggled to free herself. Wounds on her neck , dehydrated and in a bad state.Safty collar in tact. Never used a collar since.

Should I get another cat now I think it probably will be restricted to my garden.

Re: Collar or no Collar

I have to say of my 4 cats only one is collared and that is Loki - he is dark chocolate/black in some lighting and despite bing indoor only I always worry 'what if' he got out at night - I want him visable to cars

though Gypsy is also dark her long coat hides a collar so no point, Indy and Mabel are high white so collar makes little to no difference to their visability

Loki's collars are safety snap ones and I have watched him casually 'snap' them off himself (Ancol all the way) so I don't worry about him getting strangled or a paw stuck - I would be more wary if he was allowed out all the time I have to admit.

belled collars don't save birds, cats can move silently with or without a bell and I think it must be irritating to have almost constant ringing like tinitus going on for them

Re: Collar or no Collar

Yeah bells wont keep the birds safe i'm afraid they just make the cat a better predator!

I think its always a personal decision as long as they are microchipped but I personally am not a fan of collars since a good few years ago when woke up one Sunday morning and it looked like Goose had been masacred all over my bed

He was ok just a little cut on the inside of his jaw where he'd got it stuck in his mouth but it was quite a shock to wake up to I can tell you! And that was one of the quick release collars.

Kitty kat came with a collar on and she's happy with it on and its really loose so for now have left it on but I doubt I will replace it if she loses it and the first sign it looks like she might get caught up and it'll be off!
